Fishery Standard Director
MSC operates the world’s most recognised fisheries certification and eco-labelling programme. We celebrate, promote and add value to sustainable fisheries and through the leadership of our partners, create market incentives to encourage other fisheries to improve the way they fish the oceans. Over 300 fisheries around the world, landing 12 % of the annual global harvest, are now engaged at some stage of the MSC’s independent assessment process. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.
Underpinning and integral to the MSC’s work and its ecolabel program are the standards which it sets and maintains: the Fishery Standard and the Chain of Custody Standard. The Fishery Standard is a science-based, fully independent approach to identifying seafood products from sustainable sources, and its credibility is critical to the MSC’s success. Reporting to the Science & Standards Director, this exciting and demanding role will build on the achievements over the past decade of MSC’s scientific research, standard and certification setting. The Fishery Standard Director plays a central role in the organisation – the post holder is responsible for ensuring that the Fishery Standard is based on sound science and fishery management practice, and is implemented effectively.
An experienced leader and manager, the Director will be expected to make decisions in a rapidly changing environment. As part of the Corporate Strategy Group, they will also be responsible for contributing to the delivery of the vision and mission of the MSC more broadly and to the collective management and strategic development of the organisation.
The MSC is looking for a highly motivated individual who will bring specialist subject knowledge and substantial experience at senior level in a fisheries or marine science discipline relevant to the MSC standard. Ideally you will currently be in an active fishery management and/or scientific adviser role, with a significant and growing international reputation able to command the respect of industry, the scientific community and eNGOs. You must also be able to demonstrate your empathy and interest in the MSC’s mission and objectives.
