Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
We are seeking a highly motivated person to join the biological sequence analysis group of Toby Gibson at EMBL to work on software tools and web resource development. The group develops and applies biological software tools in the analysis of protein data and is known as a co-developer of the widely used ClustalW alignment software. Our most important publicly accessible bioinformatics web server is the Eukaryotic Linear Motif resource, ELM (http://elm.eu.org/). The post holder will work in supporting and extending our resources including connections with other European resources. An important activity of the group is to interface with experimental research groups at EMBL, therefore providing help and training will be an additional activity.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Sciences or related discipline, or Bioinformatics or Biology if strong computational skills have been acquired. Ideally the candidate will have prior experience working with biological databases and web resources. Familiarity with scripting languages is expected, notably Python (Django being a bonus), HTML and Javascript as well as experience with relational Databases, ideally PostgreSQL. Familiarity with Linux system administration is desired, a teaching track record would be nice to have. In addition to being a team player and taking initiative when needed, the post holder must be a quick learner with good organisational skills. Good command of English language, the working language of EMBL, is required.
