Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The Hamburg Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) carries out research in structural biology and operates leading research infrastructures for applications in life sciences, which are made available to an international research community. These facilities require substantial and state-of-the art IT infrastructures, with demanding requests for data storage, transfer and computational power. They are supported and further developed by a local IT service team.
As senior member of the EMBL Hamburg IT team, the successful candidate is expected to maintain and enhance relevant computing facilities.

Main tasks include:

  • Installation and maintenance of desktop systems;
  • Helpdesk support for staff and visiting scientists on Linux, Windows and Macintosh platforms;
  • Maintenance of the local area network, backup and data storage systems;
  • Contribution to the management of Linux-based infrastructure systems;
  • Management of installation/maintenance/upgrade projects including interactions and negotiations with suppliers;
  • Close collaboration with all members of the IT team including guidance, mentorship and advice;
  • Co-ordination of daily tasks within the IT team;
  • Close interaction with research staff and fellows as well as non-scientific staff of the EMBL Hamburg Unit.

Qualifications and Experience

The candidate should have a degree in Computer Science (or a related field) or at least five years work experience in a professional IT environment supporting heterogeneous IT infrastructures. Experience in installation, administration and troubleshooting of Linux operating systems, heterogeneous networks and applications, applications and office software is required. Experience and a structured approach to IT project management are essential. Knowledge of and experience in management of additional operating systems (Windows, Macintosh), and hardware management would be advantageous. A good working knowledge of at least one programming or scripting language would be a plus. Work experience in a scientific computing environment, especially in managing large data amounts, would be an additional asset. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support a diverse and international user community. The post holder should have a service-oriented attitude, be well-organized and be able to work to deadlines. Excellent working knowledge of English is required to succeed in this job.
