Intern, Informal Savings Study

IPA Intern, Informal Savings Study - Various Locations
Innovations for Poverty Action

Background:

IPA is looking for a team of self-starting individuals enthusiastic about research and willing to be involved in an Informal Savings study during the late Spring/Summer of 2011. Positions are available in a number of developing countries, including some where IPA has existing field infrastructure. Start and end dates are flexible, but interns are asked to commit to 10 weeks in the field over the course of the summer, beginning no sooner than the first of June.

Internship Activities:

Summer Interns for Innovations for Poverty Action working on this project will undertake a thorough study of informal savings mechanisms in a chosen country. The final product will be a write-up detailing all aspects of informal savings mechanisms and practices that have been discovered and identifying themes or conundrums in the business of savings. Another required deliverable will be a STATA-compatible dataset of data gathered during the research.

An ideal informal savings study will include a comprehensive assessment of the informal savings space in three distinct geographical locations within a given country. These three areas should include at least one urban area and one rural area, with variation in microfinance presence.

Assessments will include broad information on the informal and semi-informal savings sector business practices, as well as more specific information gleaned from in-depth studies (such as Activity-Based Costing exercises) of the different mechanisms for saving that were identified.

The qualifications required are the same as aforementioned. In addition:

* When feasible, proficiency in the local language (e.g. Spanish, French, etc.). Excellent management and organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to work independently
* Good understanding of the underlying finance theory (background in development econ, or micro econ)
