Young Voices National Facilitator

Main Purpose of the Job:
• To facilitate and develop the Leonard Cheshire Disability Global Alliance Project, “Young Voices on the UN Convention”. Being implemented by the National Council of Cheshire Services of Kenya

• Young Voices is a Global campaign network of young people with disabilities between ages 16-25. It brings together grass root groups of young people with disabilities in 21 countries of Africa, Asia and the Americas and supports them to campaign for the ratification and implementation of the UNCRPD.

• The Young Voices National Facilitator will be responsible for strengthening and developing the Young Voices Project in Kenya.

Reporting: The post holder will report to the National Council and work closely with the regional advocacy and campaign manager and International Campaigns Co-ordinator, based at Leonard Cheshire Disability in London, UK.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Mobilize and organize active young disabled persons into vibrant and functional Young Voices groups which meet regularly. Initiate new groups on direction from the National Council and strengthen existing groups in the country.

• Support the Young Voices groups to carry out campaigns on disability rights particularly on the UNCRPD, both at the local and at the National level.
• Facilitate regular group meetings of the Young Voices and extend necessary technical as well as logistical support for smooth conduct of the meetings.

• Provide training and capacity building inputs to the Young Voices groups and also arrange training by external persons.

• Provide practical support and co-ordinate the production and dissemination of films and other material by young voice groups.

• Support the Young Voices groups to develop relationships with Young Voices groups in other countries, Civil Society Organisations as well as with the Government to further their campaign objectives.

• Track and ensure delivery of Project commitments, including regular narrative as well as financial reporting.

• Any other reasonable duties including travel on request of the National Council.


Person Specifications:
Essential:
• A Degree in Social Sciences or any relevant discipline from a Recognised University/ College.
• 2 years of experience in implementing and reporting on development/ community based projects.
• Must have basic computer skills, particularly the use of excel spreadsheet, word and Powerpoint. Comfortable in using email and Internet.
• Good knowledge on issues of social exclusion, human rights and skills in campaigning and advocacy
• Passionate about working with young people with disabilities.
• Strong team player with leadership and conflict management skills.

Desirable:
• Knowledge of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
• Experience of working with youth groups or people with disabilities.
