The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of Situation Room Assistant.

Job Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of the Situation Room Coordinator/Head of Conflict Management Division (CMD), the Situation Room Assistant is responsible for monitoring developments related to peace and security in Africa, using data collection and analysis tools developed by the Situation Room. He/She will also be responsible for communicating and disseminating relevant information to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.

3. Major duties and responsibilities

The Situation Room Assistant is responsible for the following:

a. Monitoring political and socio-economic developments in Africa through:

- Monitoring and compiling information from AU sources;


- Monitoring and compiling information from on-line sources;

- Monitoring and compiling information from various other sources, including RECs, UN agencies, CSOs, partner organizations and relevant stakeholders;

c. Produce various updates, including the Daily news highlights, the Daily Report, the Weekly update, Flash reports and updates on potential conflict situations;

d. Ensure the dissemination of information to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner, through the AU Intranet applications, as well as Situation Room developed tools, within the Conflict Management Division;

e. Work closely with Early Warning Officers and maintain professional working relations with the early warning systems of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs);

f. Serve as a point-of contact between the Peace and Security Department, AU Field Missions and Liaison Offices and other stakeholders;

g. Ensure the quality and accuracy of field reports and other relevant information gathered by the Situation Room using data collection tools;

h. Assist in providing technical support and training to relevant staff on data collection and analysis tools;

i. Undertake the communications tasks of the Situation Room, including disseminating and receiving official communications;

j. Prepare updates and compilation of news items upon request by Officers;

k. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Situation Room

Coordinator and the Head of the Conflict Management Division.

4. Educational Qualifications and Work Experience Required:

Candidates must have a Diploma or higher qualifications in Political Science or

Socio-Economic development fields, International Relations, Journalism, or related Social Science fields;


Candidates must have at least five (5) years of relevant working experience in an international organization, policy research think tank or a university;

5. Other Relevant Skills Required:

Must have technical knowledge of the customization and functioning of data collection tools and software;

Must have the experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and the capacity to work under pressure;

Must be computer literate and versed in the use of computer programs such as word and excel;

Must have the exposure to the functioning of data collection tools and software

6. Language requirement:

Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an advantage.

7. Age Requirement:

Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.

8. Tenure of Appointment: The appointment shall be for an initial period of one

(1) year, the first three (3) months of which shall be on probation. It shall be renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.

11. Remuneration: The salary attached to the position is an annual lump-sum of US$ 46,264.16 inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited staff, and US$ 20,337.75 inclusive of all allowances for locally recruited staff
