Staff Editor, Freedom on the Net

Position Summary

The Staff Editor will assist in the production of Freedom House’s Freedom on the Net publication, an assessment of internet and digital media freedom. Freedom on the Net employs over 50 consultants around the world who write reports on various aspects of internet freedom, such as online censorship, surveillance, laws impacting free speech online, extralegal harassment of bloggers, use of circumvention tools, and other topics identified in our methodology. Since its inception three years ago, the project has been adopted by governments, NGOs, journalists, and individual activists as a key source of information for their advocacy, analysis, and programming decisions.

The Staff Editor will be responsible for substantive and developmental editing, copyediting, and fact-checking of the reports before they are published. He/she will also be tasked with communicating with consultants during the revision process, as well as financial tracking. He/she will also assist in planning of three international review meetings—which will take place in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa—and will travel to at least one meeting to provide logistical and analytical support.

The Staff Editor will report to the Project Director. The initial length of the Staff Editor position is 9 months and continued employment is contingent upon funding.

Some duties and responsibilities
  • Perform developmental and substantive editing, copywriting, and fact-checking of reports on internet freedom authored by non-native English speakers. In some instances, supplement the reports with own research.
  • Assist in recruiting external consultants and coordinating communications with field analysts and advisors
  • Assist in logistical preparations for ratings-review meetings in the field
  • Help with preparing graphs and other support materials for publication
  • Produce contracts and financial documents such as reconciliation and advance request in line with Freedom House requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, communications, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 2 – 4 years of directly related experience
  • Superior ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong knowledge of human rights principles and mechanisms, international human rights standards for good governance, free expression, and democracy
  • Familiarity with freedom of expression issues, particularly internet governance, regulation and censorship
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and take responsibility for manage parts of projects
  • Strong project management skills for conception through implementation, evaluation, and close-out
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to facilitate cooperation between people with divergent views
  • Ability to apply superb attention to detail and consistently produce timely and error-free work
