Director, New Business Development

The Business Development Director will continue the growth of PSI’s public and private sector fundraising capabilities with a strong focus on raising money for promising new health areas, while maintaining ambitious revenue growth targets. This is a demanding, challenging and exciting role, requiring a dynamic individual with highly developed communication skills and experience as well as knowledge of social marketing and public health issues. The position requires the ability to represent PSI and influence others to support PSI’s work and to build and maintain relationships with new and current donors. The position is based in Washington, D.C., with approximately 20% international travel and will report to the VP for New Business Development.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Plan, direct and manage public sector resource acquisition for the organization in coordination with senior managers and country representatives worldwide;

•Identify and pursue new business opportunities (solicited and unsolicited) among a diverse range of both public and private donors;

•Monitor trends in major donor financing and development;

•Establish and/or cultivate close relationships with key current and prospective private donors in collaboration with the Corporate Marketing and Communications department;

•Supervise a team of 7 + NBD managers to work with field and headquarters staff on program design and proposal writing for strategic opportunities for PSI;

•Coordinate with PSI/Europe to win funding from European donors;

•Develop relationships and negotiate teaming agreements with partner organizations to bid on proposals;

•Oversee Business Development department budget;

•Ensure that PSI submits over 100 high quality proposals worth over $1,200,000,000 annually to a diverse variety of donors both public and private (USAID, DFID, KfW, Global Fund, Foundations, and other);

•Assist in the expansion of PSI’s for-profit fund raising efforts (psi.com) by identifying and bidding on opportunities via a new business model.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•Relevant post-graduate degree (MBA, MIA, MPH, etc.) or equivalent experience

•Demonstrated NBD experience, especially with large donors funding health interventions, including USAID, the Global Fund, and European donors;

•Demonstrated experience writing/leading successfully funded large (>$50,000,000) technical proposals for USAID, DFID, KfW, Global Fund, etc.;

•Demonstrated experience winning successful funding from large private foundations (including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Packard, and others);

•Demonstrated experience providing leadership to a business development team that has raised upwards of $500,000,000 annually for a large international NGO or contractor;

•At least ten years of personnel and financial management experience related to international development;

•Knowledge of international development and health issues; experience with social marketing or social franchising particularly helpful;

•Strong network of contacts within the international donor and NGO community;

•Developing country work experience strongly preferred;

•Outstanding proposal writing and editing skills;

•Diplomacy, strong negotiation and interpersonal communication skills;

•Ability to work with Senior Directors and VPs to guide proposals, solicit new donors, etc.;

•Ability to prioritize and perform a variety of tasks on short notice within designated deadlines.
