Thailand Special Community Service Worker

The IRC has a rich history of assisting refugees to apply for U.S. resettlement, from its founding in 1933 to help vulnerable individuals escape Nazi-occupied Europe, to pioneering the Joint Voluntary Agency which assisted Indochinese refugees for 22 years, to operations in Croatia, Sierra Leone and Sudan. Over the years, IRC has processed some half million refugees worldwide for U.S. resettlement.

Based in Bangkok with four field offices in Thailand and Malaysia, the IRC Resettlement Support Center (IRC-RSC) assists persons throughout East Asia seeking permanent resettlement in the United States. Operating in fifteen countries, the RSC prepares refugee applications for the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, provides information to resettlement agencies about arriving refugees and offers cultural orientation training to those refugees bound for the U.S.

SCOPE: The Special Community Service Worker will act as a liaison between a specialized caseload and all partners involved with the United States Refugee Admissions Program. This high profile caseload requires services that fall outside the regular processing activities of the RSC. All services must be provided in a professional and objective manner that reinforces clear boundaries, roles and responsibilities both for the RSC worker and the refugee. This position reports to the Deputy Casework Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide interpretation, translation and follow-up for refugee processing activities in Thailand and throughout East Asia • Liaise with US and other country Embassy officials • Coordinate with IOM to resolve lodging, medical and departure issues for refugees • Orient refugees on house rules, emergency medical services, and other pertinent information • Liaise with personnel at shelter locations to resolve issues and provide processing information to refugees • Ensure that refugees evidence ability to access emergency care when necessary • Assist with hospital transport and interpretation in emergency situations where no alternative is available • Maintain a contact log for all refugee interactions, including visits, problems and resolutions • Manage and maintain a bi-weekly report of the special caseload for external reporting purposes • Provide weekly updates to Deputy Casework Coordinator • Prescreen, and process cases inside the Immigration Detention Center • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS: • University degree • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including reports writing and record keeping • Fluency in English and Korean (read, write and speak) • Ability to provide services in a sensitive but professional and objective manner • Proven experience and success in working with a multi-cultural staff, ability to work successfully in both a team environment and independently • Proficient in PC use, Microsoft office, email and Internet
