Tasks and Responsibilities

Objective:

The selected intern will be an integral member of the Democratic Governance and Participation and Public Affairs team, and he/she will be expected to contribute substantively to support ODIHR’s core activities in the field of democratic governance. In so doing, the intern will:

  • become acquainted with methods and approaches used in developing programmes and projects in support of strengthening democratic governance and women’s participation in public affairs in OSCE participating States;
  • gain an understanding of the normative framework for international and OSCE support to democratic governance, in particular the OSCE’s human dimension commitments;
  • learn about challenges to, and prospects for democratic governance in, OSCE participating States, particularly in countries from Central Asia, the South Caucasus and South East Europe; and
  • develop his/her professional writing and communication skills, and apply his/her research and analytical skills.

Tasks:
Under the supervision of the Chief of the Democratic Governance and Participation in Public Affairs Unit (DGPPA), the intern will:

  • Assist OSCE ODIHR projects in support of OSCE efforts to strengthen parliaments, in particular by collecting, processing and analyzing data, and written materials, of relevance to OSCE efforts to strengthen parliaments, in particular researching:
    • Ethics and conduct systems in OSCE area parliaments
    • Women’s caucuses in OSCE area parliaments;
  • Assist OSCE ODIHR in developing publications, including:
    • Preparation of the NHRIs and Gender Equality Handbook
  • Proactively monitor country situations in support of DGPPA activities;
  • Research and prepare briefing packs, including analytical country information notes, in support of ODIHR and DGPPA staff missions and country assessment visits;
  • Conduct desk reviews and research of literature/reference materials as assigned by the DGPPA staff to identify pertinent issues for the work of the DGPPA;
  • Draft, as required, written materials (first drafts of project/concept notes, information notes, website content, summaries, etc) in support of DGPPA and Department needs;
  • Assist in preparing and organizing meetings, expert consultations and roundtables implemented by DGPPA as part of ongoing projects, in both substantive and organizational aspects;
  • Liaise with project partners and OSCE field operations on the organizational and logistical aspects related to the implementation of DGPPA programmes/projects and meeting organization;
  • Assist in the development of future projects and activities to be implemented by the DGPPA, as well as participating in and supporting any monitoring and evaluation activities linked to past or current projects; and
  • Perform any other duties as required.

Necessary Qualifications

  • Students in the final year of higher education (university or other accredited institution) at undergraduate or postgraduate level; or recent graduates or postgraduates, i.e. within one year of graduation, with a background in political science, law, international relations, history or other relevant subject;
  • Good knowledge of international and OSCE standards of democratic governance;
  • Excellent knowledge of English (other OSCE language knowledge, in particular Russian, would be a plus)
  • Computer literacy, particularly MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Strong analytical, organizational and drafting skills; resourcefulness;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Internship Dates:
February 2012 to May 2012 (longer periods, up to six months, can be considered)
