Irrigation Engineer


The objective of this position is to provide an engineering service to the Cane Operations Division. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will design cost-effective and efficient irrigation systems according to SABI norms, survey existing and new farm developments and be responsible for performance evaluation and improvements of irrigation systems. Functions will include managing a bulk water allocation programme, investigating and adopting new technology in irrigation and applying precision farming techniques. Project management of agricultural development projects, establishment of technical training programme for pump operators, promotion of safety and health standards and environmental management principles as well as active participation within the technical team, including engineers and technicians will also form part of his/her duties.

The ideal candidate should be computer literate and in possession of a BEng or BTech degree preferably in Civil, Agricultural or Mechanical Engineering, coupled with at least 5 years’ appropriate experience in the water and irrigation engineering field. Excellent knowledge of Modelmaker software and MS Office suite and proficiency in the use of GPS surveying equipment are essential. The ideal candidate will be a resilient self-starter and excellent team player, with a positive approach to solving problems.
