As part of the Feed the Future Initiative, USAID is funding three projects in West Africa, Ethiopian Highlands, East and Southern Africa which are known as the AFRICA RISING Program (Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation). The project in Ethiopia, ‘Sustainable intensification of crop-livestock systems to improve food security and farm income diversification in the Ethiopian highlands’ is led by ILRI.

This five-year project will focus on the integration of farming system components to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Sustainable increase of whole farm productivity
  • Improved on- and off-farm natural resource management
  • Improved connectivity to and utilization of off-farm systems (e.g., markets, inputs suppliers) that support sustainable intensification
  • Increased nutritional and economic levels of the target populations, especially women and children
  • Reduced vulnerability and increased resilience of the target population and farming systems to adverse environmental and economic challenges.

The position: ILRI seeks to recruit a Project Coordinator to coordinate and manage the project (about 40% time) and provide scientific input into project implementation (about 60% time).

  • Project management including ensuring appropriate liaison with the donor, with international and national partners, establishment of agreements, financial management and reporting, technical reporting, logistical support for implementation.
  • Engage with key national government partners to ensure research activities and outputs are aligned with national priorities
  • Engage with development organisations to ensure that research outputs are translated into development outcomes
  • Establish and maintain an effective multidisciplinary and multi-organisation team of scientists and development partners that will ensure smooth inter-centre collaboration in implementing an integrated approach for improving the productivity of the targeted systems.
  • Liaise with the other two projects in the AFRICA RISING Program to build synergies and identify opportunities for cross-learning and liaise with the Monitoring and Evaluation Team that is providing M&E input to all three projects.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of an effective communication strategy for the project
  • Participate in implementing research that integrates at the farm level elements of crop, livestock and natural resource management technologies for sustainable intensification. In particular the coordinator will be expected to contribute to research on crop-livestock interactions.

Requirements

  • A PhD in agricultural sciences preferably in a discipline directly relevant to the project, which could include livestock production or crop-livestock interactions.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in agricultural research for development with a proven track record of research in farming systems.
  • Experience of managing diverse projects spanning multi-disciplinary teams, participatory research, development and government sectors, financial management and investor engagement
  • Proven skills to lead, motivate and manage teams and to obtain positive results from working in diverse partnerships with national, regional and international institutions in research, extension, development and in public, private and civil society
  • Good communication skills in English, including written and oral.
  • Experience in issues of natural resource management, especially in Africa would be an advantage

Post location: ILRI Campus in Addis Ababa.

Duration: 3 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 5B, Senior Scientist level 3.
