The NLCTA (Next Linear Collider Test Accelerator) is a test accelerator facility at SLAC, operated by the Accelerator Research Division (ARD), which supports the development of accelerator science and technology that will enable new accelerators in photon science and high energy physics as well as other fields of science, medicine and industry. Optical lasers are a key technology for the generation and manipulation of high brightness electron bunches essential to the facilities science and applications missions.
The posted position is for an experienced Laser Engineer to take responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the existing laser and beam delivery systems, to lead upgrades in the performance and reliability of the laser systems, and to work with ARD scientists and engineers on laser-based experiments at NLCTA.  The successful candidate will also participate in other laser projects within ARD and the Accelerator Directorate such as FACET, ASTA, LCLS II, and others.
Administrative management of this position is through the Lasers in Accelerators Department in the Laser Science and Technology Division in the LCLS Directorate.  Functional management of this position is through the manager of the Test Facilities Department of the Accelerator Research Division in the Accelerator Directorate.
Specific Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
  • Operate, maintain, and develop ultrafast laser systems, diagnostics, and optical beam transport systems in support of the NLCTA scientific mission
  • Support laser-based experiments at NLCTA
  • Responsible for laser safety at NLCTA including work planning and control, training, safety documentation and records, etc.
  • Support laser-based projects and experiments at other AD facilities, e.g. FACET, ASTA, LCLS-II
