Institute on Aging Director, Communications & Marketing

The mission of Institute on Aging is to assure that people, as they age, be as healthy and independent as possible. To realize this mission, we create and provide innovative programs in health, social services, education and research. After more than twenty-five years, these IOA programs continue enabling older and disabled adults to remain in their homes and communities while living life fully.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), this position is responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all agency marketing communications, marketing strategies, and public relations activities, both external and internal, to increase public awareness and market share. Develop and integrate brand strategies throughout the agency and at every point of public contact. Oversee development and implementation of support materials and services for programs in the areas of communications, marketing, and public relations. Direct the efforts of the department staff and coordinate Communications and Marketing with the other functions of the agency, at the strategic and tactical levels.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Annually create and implement strategic organizational marketing plan, working with CAO, VP’s, program directors, and Director of Education to strengthen IOA’s brand in concert with agency mission, values, and goals.
  • Conduct market research to develop Communications and MarketingPlan, working with CAO and other Advancement Team members. Ensure the plan is executed. Remain current on trends in the industry and marketplace to adjust plans in a timely manner.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to quarterly market outreach plans generated by each fee-for-service program, working with IOA Program VP’s and directors. Oversee marketing expenses for each plan.
  • Develop annual budget for all Communications and Marketing activities, collateral and department expenses, in-line with annual Communications and Marketing Plan. Responsible for the achievement of communications / marketing / public relations financial objectives.
  • Develop and coordinate means to seek regular input from the agency’s key constituencies regarding the quality and effectiveness of the Communications and Marketing Plan.
  • Present promotional campaign ideas in various types of media and counsel top management on effective communication strategies.
  • Work with IOA Board of Directors Marketing Committee to keep CEO and Board of Directors informed of marketing strategy/campaigns.
  • Supervise communications and marketing staff members – set their goals and priorities and conduct performance reviews. Work closely with Information and Referral staff, VP’s, program directors, executive management, and Director of Education to communicate marketing initiatives.
  • Responsible for editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all agency publications and online messaging. Ensure consistent look, feel, and messaging among all organizational collateral and advertising. Oversee creation of marketing collateral, including print/ outdoor/ direct advertising, brochures, fact sheets, newsletters, direct mail pieces, and external and internal websites.
  • Manage design /content /updating of websites and microsites.
  • Oversee media relationships; encourage external publications’ event calendars and editorial content to reflect key IOA events, and communicate newsworthy stories to the media.
  • Initiate press releases and media inquiries when appropriate. Post monthly releases on a news wire service and submit to relevant editors/calendar editors.
  • Oversee and assist in writing and creating various monthly newsletters for professionals, donors and community.
  • Work with graphic designer to create collateral and electronic communications consistent with IOA brand and in-line with our outreach goals and objectives.
  • Drive enrollment in IOA programs through community/professional outreach, advertising, and collaborative projects.
  • Assist Advancement Department and IOA programs with marketing collateral and materials for events; oversee participation at community events (e.g., health fairs); arrange for IOA speakers at events.
  • Educate staff on IOA programs and events, review customer service training needs and design solutions for Intake and Referral staff and other IOA ambassadors; send out emails to further communicate organizational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications, and public relations activities. Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts practices, and procedures.
  • Required: 5 years of success in increasingly senior communications and marketing management positions. Development & fundraising experience a plus.
  • Strong computer literacy in social media, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Familiarity with desktop (e.g. Adobe CS4) and web design software (e.g., DreamWeaver) programs a plus.
  • Able to use good judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Able to manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Strong creative, professional, strategic, analytical organizational and personal sales skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations and negotiating with vendors and media.
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, and hiring, training, developing, supervising and appraising personnel.
  • Committed to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.
  • Community oriented; interest in working on issues of aging.
  • Valid California driver’s license and auto insurance.
