Oxfam Great Britain Law and Justice Advisor

£36,110 – £45,350 per annum
2 year contract – (second year pending full funding)
In many countries across the world, the poorest people are denied legal redress, often lacking the awareness, resources and confidence to challenge the violation of their rights, using the legal process. For that reason, Oxfam is committed to ensure Access to Justice is integrated into our programme, advocacy and campaigning work, as the need requires and context allows. It’s an ideal that aims to give the poor, and women in particular, access to fair and effective legal systems and push for government’s accountability to provide fair and equitable rule of law including mechanisms to enforce it, allow citizens to legally challenge governments and corporations and seek legal redress. It’s a wide and challenging breadth of work. One that calls for a talented legal professional to drive our efforts and make a real impact both now and in the long-term.

The role
In this brand new, forward-thinking role, you’ll provide strategic leadership in the promotion of a ‘One Oxfam’ approach to Access to Justice. It’s about developing and delivering a long-term vision and strategy that will drive, support and realise our aims for supporting and protecting citizens through effective and efficient use of the law. So looking at the programmes currently in place across all Oxfam’s affiliates, you’ll analyse performance, identify areas for improvement and determine the changes required to make a major impact. Combining this insight with your own expert knowledge of social justice and legal systems, you’ll go on to deliver improved processes, policies and programmes with access to justice at their very core. Part of that means working with programme and advocacy advisors and staff both in headquarters and in country to implement lessons learned, share knowledge and drive awareness. But it also means seeking support from external sources – building up a network of local and international lawyers to take on pro-bono litigation work and to represent citizens in important cases, connecting them to lawyers’ networks in other countries to build their capacity. Succeed, and you’ll help to create fair and just legal systems for vulnerable people the world over.

What we’re looking for
A legal professional, your academic background will be underpinned by substantial experience of legal matters and social issues, gained in the context of development at country or regional level, as well as global level. As well as demonstrating an understanding of the emerging trends and challenges facing litigation, you’ll be entirely committed to the aims of better governance, women’s rights and access to justice. An attitude reinforced by the work you’ve done with communities and civil society organisations in developing countries. To influence national policy making calls for excellent communication skills, not to mention the gravitas, credibility and confidence to negotiate at all levels. And as a team-player with natural thought-leadership skills, you’ll have no problem drawing on your extensive knowledge to coach, teach and enhance the performance of others. From a practical point of view, you’ll need to be willing to travel for up to ten weeks a year and engage into fund-raising work. Fluency in English and preferably another language (French, Spanish, Dutch, Swahili, Portugese) is required.
