Project Officer EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is looking for a Project Officer to administer a European Commission-funded collaborative project in the area of in evolutionary developmental biology (EvoDevo), called "NEPTUNE - Multidisciplinary training in evo-devo and neurobiology of marine animal models”. NEPTUNE is an Initial Training Network (ITN) supported under the FP7 People Programme, also known as the Marie Curie Programme. ITNs offer early-stage researchers the opportunity to improve their research skills, join established research teams and enhance their career prospects.
EMBL is a world-leading international molecular biology research organisation providing an exciting environment for both scientists and administrative personnel.
The successful candidate will work closely with the coordinator of the network, Dr. Detlev Arendt of the Developmental Biology Unit, and other members of the network and of the Arendt laboratory. The candidate ideally has a background or degree in basic biology and an interest and experience in grant administration. They are familiar with European Commission Grants and the basic financial, legal and contractual requirements thereof.
The post holder will manage the organisational and administrative aspects of NEPTUNE in close collaboration with the coordinator. Close interactions with the participating partner institutions and European funding organisation will be required.
In particular, the Project Officer will have the following responsibilities:
  • Managing and keeping an overview of administrative and organisational matters of NEPTUNE in direct cooperation with the Coordinator.
  • Acting as a reference and contact point for the consortium regarding all administrative and legal regulations of an ITN/FP7, as well as the EC IT tools.
  • Monitoring project progress and risk management.
  • Intellecutal Property management.
  • Compiling and delivering project reports to the EC.
  • Supporting the Finance Department in the production of the financial reports.
  •  Effective and timely exchange of information, materials, and documentation between partners, the EC and EMBL.
  • Stimulating and structuring communication within the network and with others outside the project, including dissemination activities.
  •  Planning and maintenance of the project website.
  •  Active involvement in network recruitment.
  •  Organizing and coordinating training and scientific events (summer courses, annual graduate schools, conferences and workshops on site and abroad).
Qualifications and Experience
  • The post holder will have outstanding and effective organisational skills and will enjoy working in an independent and pro-active manner, across a broad range of functions and with maximum flexibility in a dynamic international scientific environment.
  • Effective multitasking and the ability to work with tight deadlines are also required.
  • Very good spoken and written English language skills are essential for carrying out the work; other linguistic skills (especially German) will be a plus.
  • A science degree is desirable but not mandatory.
  • The post holder will have good numerical skills as well as very good knowledge of the Office Programme, especially Excel.
  • Experience in conference/meeting organization would be beneficial.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, willingness to travel in Europe, as well as creativity and a collaborative team spirit are required.
  • The ability to anticipate needs, to promote the career of students and postdocs, and maintaining excellent working relationships with all team members is essential;
