Safety and Compliance Assistance Program Team Member


The Department of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University has an immediate opening for a member of the Safety & Compliance Assistance (SCA) Program. The SCA team member provides safety, compliance, survey, and training support to laboratories and other areas with hazardous material usage and storage, and ensures University compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and occupational health and safety regulations. He or she provides in-the-field support for other EH&S technical programs. Additionally, he or she performs other related duties as requested by the supervisor or EH&S management and provides support as needed to the University during emergencies. All SCA team members must comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
(75%) Assist areas associated with chemical, biohazardous, and radiological materials and wastes with maintaining compliance and good health and safety practices by conducting walkthrough inspections and developing working relationships with area staff and students. Review environmental health and safety management practices and document findings as appropriate. Conduct follow-up for issues identified and track until resolved. Determine whether to elevate unresolved issues to SCA supervisor or area management as needed. Train area personnel about regulatory requirements and best management practices to facilitate and promote compliance with applicable environmental and occupational health and safety laws and regulations as needed. Accompany regulatory inspectors and help to ensure that EH&S policies and local compliance programs are consistent with the interpretations of the inspectors. 

(20%) Provide support to EH&S technical programs including Environmental Programs, Laboratory Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Biosafety, Health Physics, and Fire. Includes assisting with implementation of new or revised programs or initiatives and collecting data on laboratory practices and trends, as well as collecting lab-specific information on incidents and issues. Review and make recommendations on written standard operating procedures and conduct follow-up on laboratory incidents. Conduct routine, terminal, and equipment radiation safety surveys.

(5%) Provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies. Other duties as assigned by supervisor or EH&S management.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and applications; knowledge of environmental and occupational health and safety laws, codes, and regulations
• Understanding of academic research environment and general understanding of the research and tools used in the area to which they are assigned

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS – The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

• Ability to initiate, develop, and maintain positive working relationship with the campus community; ability to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of personnel, including Stanford faculty, staff, and students who hold varying roles and have varying responsibilities, and representatives of regulatory agencies
• Proficiency with computers using the Microsoft Office suite of applications for creation as well as modification of documents, how to access and use the Internet, and use of an email program such as Microsoft Outlook
• Ability to manage extensive walking, up to 5-6 hrs per day on occasion. Physical ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam); ability to crawl, bend, climb ladders, and lift and carry heavy equipment (approximately 50 lbs.)
• Excellent attention to detail and thoroughness in accomplishing assigned tasks from inception through completion, including follow-up, in a multi-tasking environment; pride in doing the job correctly and completely
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, but will not hesitate to ask questions and/or seek information from the supervisor and other team members so that tasks can be completed correctly
• Strong self motivation; proactive, high-energy, enthusiastic, “can do” work ethic; and ability to handle potentially stressful situations with a sense of humor and tolerance for ambiguity
• Ability to maintain punctuality and good attendance
• Valid California driver’s license and ability to comply with Stanford policy on vehicle use
• Ability to pass an FBI background check
QUALIFICATIONS
• At minimum, BA/BS in a natural or physical science; MS in a discipline related to health and safety desired.
• At minimum, 2 years of directly applicable health & safety experience and/or research experience with demonstrable health & safety responsibilities; experience in an academic environment highly desirable.
