Senior Agronomist/Deputy Chief of Party - Rwanda


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
International Resources Group (IRG), an Engility company, seeks a Senior Agronomist/Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) for the anticipated Feed the Future Rwanda Sustainable Food, Agriculture, and Nutrition (SFAN) Activity that will increase smallholder farmer incomes, improve household nutritional status, and increase the resilience of the agriculture system to the changing climate.
The Senior Agronomist/Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) will provide overall leadership of the Sustainable Agriculture Productivity component of the program as well as ensuring cohesive integration of agronomy across all SFAN components. In addition, the DCOP will support the COP with technical, administrative, and financial management leadership. As the Senior Agronomist, the DCOP will be responsible for developing project strategy for farmer capacity building to sustainably increase agricultural productivity and overseeing a team to implement this strategy. The position requires significant experience in agricultural extension, climate smart agriculture, facilitating access to inputs, and strengthening farmer resilience to climate change. DCOP candidates should also have experience in integrating gender and nutrition concerns into agricultural development interventions. The position reports to the COP.
MINIMUM TANGIBLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in international development, agriculture/agronomy, environment, or related field of study.
  • Seven years of professional experience in developing countries, some of which should be in Africa, in food security and agronomy in managing or implementing development programs. Experience with East Africa or Rwanda agriculture sector is an asset.
  • Knowledge of a wide array of agriculture subjects preferred, including agriculture economics, agriculture policy, agribusiness, agronomy, agriculture extension, and market development.
  • Experience with agriculture research integration in project implementation, and experience working to improve private and public extension systems.
  • Strong verbal and written skills in English are required.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with nutrition sensitive and climate smart agriculture concepts highly preferred.
  • Experience in designing or managing sustainable agricultural production systems is preferred.
  • Knowledge of French and Kinyarwanda preferred.
