Job Description:

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international financial institution that promotes central bank cooperation and provides banking services exclusively to central banks. Based in Basel, Switzerland, with representative offices for Asia and the Pacific in Hong Kong SAR and for the Americas in Mexico City, the BIS has staff from some 50 countries.

The BIS seeks a Data Bank Statistical Analyst for the BIS headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.

Purpose of the job:
Data Bank Services operates the BIS Data Bank on behalf of, and in cooperation with, its member central banks. The Data Bank provides a broad range of high-quality up-to-date economic, monetary and financial statistics to economists and statisticians at central banks and the BIS. Data Bank Services also operates the Secretariat of the Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics. The Data Bank Statistical Analyst is responsible for all statistical matters relating to a group of reporting central banks and/or a set of statistical topics in the Data Bank.

Principal accountabilities:
* Ensures adequate coverage of the macroeconomic time series in the BIS Data Bank, encouraging a broadening of the coverage where appropriate through regular contacts with data users and suppliers.
* Ensures timely availability of high-quality macroeconomic statistics to BIS and central bank economists and statisticians. Advises statisticians at reporting central banks on methodological and data quality issues.
* Advises BIS and central bank economists and statisticians on all questions of Data Bank contents and coverage with respect to availability, relevance, definition, methodology and trustworthiness, as well as on selection of the best data for specific purposes.
* Ensures correct methodological documentation of series with respect to series definition, special characteristics, way of calculation, relationships between series and sources of publication. Analyses methodological issues with central bank economists and statisticians.
* Represents Data Bank Services at regular meetings organised at the BIS on the BIS Data Bank (Data Experts' Meetings and Workshops).
* Represents the BIS in international meetings of statisticians. Visits participating central banks to present and promote BIS Data Bank Services and to discuss statistical questions with users and suppliers.
* Follows developments of statistical methodologies in international organisations, central banks and national statistical offices.
* Contributes to the formulation of business requirements for the further development of Data Bank services offered to central banks.

Job Requirements:
Qualifications:
# Master's degree in economics or statistics; sound knowledge of macroeconomics and statistical methodology, in particular financial statistics, monetary and banking statistics and national accounts

Skills:
# Good understanding of statistical databases, in particular statistical quality control methods.
# Sound analytical skills.
# Strong team spirit.
# Good communication skills for dealing with clients (central bank and BIS economists and statisticians).
# Good presentation skills.
# Ability to work independently.
# Fluent spoken and written English.
# Good knowledge of another main world language desirable.

Work experience:
# Experience as a statistician at a central bank or international institution would be an asset.
