Editor in Chief for a media project in Somalia based in Somalia/Somaliland
Purpose of the job
Press Now runs a complex project for newsgathering, production and dissemination of journalistic programs for all Somali speaking areas, leading a network of Somali media outlets (radio, TV and internet). The project has training, production and broadcast aspects. You will be responsible for the content produced in this project. You will cooperate with the country coordinator who is responsible for the logistical organization and coordination of the project and are accountable towards the international project coordinator for Somalia in the Netherlands.
Main Tasks and Functions
- To be responsible for the production and content of broadcast;
- To lead the Central Desk;
- To supervise and appraise the work of all editorial staff;
- To be the executive secretary of the Editorial Policy Committee;
- To implement the editorial policies and code of conduct;
- To supervise the content of the website;
- To be responsible for the content and execution of training and capacity building.
Required skills and experience
- You are an experienced journalist and editorial manager familiar with training and transfer of skills;
- You can demonstrate at least 4 years of relevant work experience in journalism of which at least 1 year internationally, and ideally have previous experience working in a fragile state;
- You are a team worker, a good organizer, have outstanding social and intercultural skills and are able to take decisions in a fast-moving context. You have skills in coaching/capacity building;
- You are able and ready to live in Somaliland and to be based there for continuous periods of time;
- You have good communication skills and fluent command of English both in writing and speaking. Basic knowledge of Somali gives you preference, French or Arabic is an asset.
Terms and conditions
- The employee will be contracted by Press Now;
- Fulltime contract for six months (with possibility of extension);
- Press Now aims to start the position in June 2011.
- Salary according to Press Now project coordinator scale, a minimum of € 3133.- and a maximum of € 4700.- gross per month on the basis of a 36 hours working week. Additional allowances and insurances for the local situation will be arranged.
