Junior Web Content Manager

Background:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Iraq has recently finalized its first Country Programme Document (CPD), 2011 – 2014. The CPD is based on the priorities and challenges identified in the 2009 Common Country Assessment (CCA) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2011 – 2014. It is also fully aligned with the Government of Iraq’s National Development Plan (NDP) for 2010-2014 and the UNDP Strategic Plan.
With the implementation of the CPD and the development of CPAP, UNDP Iraq will be expected to take on a much more active communications strategy. A central component of this new strategy will be the launching of a new UNDP Iraq website by the first quarter of 2012, together with an array of communications material for UNDP Iraq’s programmes.
Under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist and under the guidance of the Country Director, the Junior Web Content Manager will be responsible for providing support to the finalization of UNDP Iraq’s communication products and preparing them for online publication and in other media. The Consultant will be involved in the drafting, review, revision, copy-editing and publishing phases for all UNDP Iraq communication products.
Impact of Results
The impact of the results will be:
· UNDP Iraq profile represented online in up-to-date and easily accessible manner, supporting outreach efforts for donors and the public,
· Harmonised language and narrative voice used for communications products,
· Improved communications channels with faster turnaround from concept to product,
· Expedited delivery of communications products for UNDP’s cross-cutting focus areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:
The work of the consultant will largely focus on preparing and proofing material in preparation for the new UNDP Iraq website and for publication in other media. It is expected that the Consultant will perform the following tasks:
· Assist in preparation of content for new UNDP Iraq website,
· Deliver website maintenance for initial six-month rollout phase,
· Apply revision and quality control mechanisms to communication products,
· Undertake other technical writing tasks as required.
1. Assist in preparation of content for new UNDP Iraq website (25%)
a. Assist the Communications Specialist in collection, preparation, and revision of material for the new UNDP Iraq website,
b. Contribute to the process of information design, to ensure that content is appropriately structured to meet the goals of UNDP and the needs of users,
c. Prepare scripts for audio voiceovers,
d. Liaise with relevant offices to secure translated material as required.
2. Deliver website maintenance for initial six-month rollout phase (25%)
a. Assist in the maintenance, management and elaboration of content for website,
b. Liaise regularly with UNDP programme pillars for new communication material, updated stories, and elaborated narratives.
3. Apply revision and quality control mechanisms to communication products (25%)
a. Apply professional and technical writing standards to drafts of documents, as needed,
b. Encourage standardised text, phrasing, and communication messages across UNDP Iraq’s communication products,
4. Undertake other technical writing tasks as required (25%)
a. Support stocktaking efforts to develop a baseline of UNDP Iraq’s communications strategy,
b. Assist programmes in preparing material for online and print publication.

Required Skills and Experience

Recruitment Qualifications
Education: Advanced degree in Journalism, English, History, Politics, Post-Conflict studies or other comparable degree.
Experience: 2-3 years of relevant experience at the international level in communications, reporting, or other public information role.
Language Requirements: Native English speaker with excellent spoken and written language skills. Knowledge of Arabic would be a plus.

  • Provide a sample report prepared by the applicant in the recent past.
Financial proposal: The financial proposal will specify a total lump sum amount and payment terms around specific and measurable (qualitative and quantitative) deliverables. Payments are based upon output, i.e. upon delivery of the services specified in the TOR. A breakdown of this lump sum amount (including travel, per diems) is to be provided by the IC candidate.
