About InterAction: InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), with more than 190 members working in every developing country. Members are faith-based and secular, large and small, with a focus on the world’s most poor and vulnerable populations. The U.S. public, foundations and others support the efforts of our membership via funding totaling more than $13 billion a year, according to 2009 estimates. InterAction’s funds come from dues and generous grants from others, such as foundations. Using its collective voice, InterAction seeks to shape important policy decisions on relief and long term development issues, including foreign assistance, the environment, women, health, education and agriculture. Members are at the forefront in responding to humanitarian crises and disasters worldwide and InterAction acts as a hub in these efforts. Alliance members adhere to standards drawn up by InterAction, which aim to ensure accountability and transparency in financial management, fundraising, governance and program performance. About the Position: Position Title: Security Coordinator Position Type: Full-time Location: Reporting to: Washington, DC Security Director

BASIC FUNCTIONS: The Coordinator supports InterAction’s Security Director in carrying out the core functions of the Security Unit: collecting and sharing security information; advocating for staff safety; designing and implementing security training; and promoting a common security framework and standards of good practices.

Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate the sharing of information regarding security incidents among InterAction members;
  2. Support IA membership in implementing Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS);
  3. Promote security of national and international staff members;
  4. Facilitate the identification of security training courses;
  5. Identify best practices that address the range of security issues that humanitarian aid workers face in the field (gender, race, creed, religion, sexual orientation ethnicity, etc);
  6. Liaise with other security coordinators and institutions;
  7. Help implement the UN-NGO ‘Saving Lives Together’ arrangement;
  8. Promote and gather feedback on humanitarian space and accessibility;
  9. Support the Security Advisory Group (SAG), and InterAction on security initiatives; help develop an internet site for NGO Security that provides country briefs, a collective of training opportunities and online links, assessment tools and common incident reporting and sharing;
  10. Support the Security Director as needed.

Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of three years experience (preferably 1-2 years in the field in international relief work). Overseas experience in staff safety and operational security would be a good asset.
  2. Proven networking, coordination, and interpersonal skills are essential, as this is the core of InterAction’s and the Security Unit’s method of operation.
  3. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  4. Excellent leadership, negotiation, and administration skills.
  5. Knowledge of international politics and cultures.
  6. Ability to create an environment of innovation and entrepreneurship.
  7. Availability for possible domestic and international travel on short notice.
  8. Ability to operate software systems such as Microsoft Office Suite and proprietary databases.

Note: Professional experience in the military or police is not a substitute for the above requirements. The position requires solid program management skills. Experience in security as stated above is preferred but not essential.
