Organ:
The General Secretariat directs all the administrative and financial aspects of the Union's activities, including the implementation of the provisions of the administrative regulations on operational questions, the dissemination of information on telecommunication matters for operational and other purposes, the provision of legal advice to the Bureaux of the Union and the departments of the General Secretariat, logistic support to the Union's activities including conferences, the coordination of the work of the Union with other international organizations, the dissemination of information to the Member States and Sector Members, press, corporate and individual users of telecommunications and the general public. The General Secretariat is also responsible for the organization of world telecommunication exhibitions and forums.
Organization Unit:
The Conferences and Publications Department is responsible for ensuring communication between people involved in ITU activities and for the dissemination of ITU products, through its conference services (conference organization and logistics), language services (translation and interpretation in the six official languages, précis-writing, terminology and reference services) and documentation and publications services (text capture and text processing, electronic document management, publication composition, reproduction and distribution of paper and physical electronic products, and sales and marketing).
Duties / Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of the Terminology, References and Computer Aids to Translation Section (STRAIT), the incumbent carries out the following tasks:

References
  • Examines and analyses documents to be translated to determine the type of references required.
  • Establishes a reference file on the basis of research in the service's files and collections and of enquiries of any other appropriate source (inside or outside ITU).
  • Provides translators and revisers, upon request and after similar research, with further references concerning the above files or other translations (especially where documents for outside translation are concerned).
  • Prepares basic documentation for future conferences and meetings, according to available schedules and forecasts.

    Documentation
  • Receives, sorts and classifies collections of ITU documents and publications.
  • Is responsible for keeping up to date and indexing the aforementioned collections and for updating the corresponding listings.

    Other tasks
  • Inputs data into the terminology database.
  • Provides general computer assistance to users, including on how to use the computer aids to translation tools.
  • Qualifications required
    Education:
    Complete secondary education with a diploma OR complete equivalent technical or commercial studies with a diploma.
    Experience:
    At least 5 years of experience in the field of the post. Knowledge or experience of a translation unit's activities and of ITU documentation would be an advantage. (A maximum of three years of studies in the field of the post and in a recognized school may replace the required experience on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience.)
    Languages:
    Advanced-level knowledge of English and intermediate-level knowledge of one of the other official languages of the Union, preferably Arabic, Russian or Spanish. Knowledge of a third language would be an advantage.
    Competencies:
  • Typing in two languages.
  • Experience in the use of the main computer applications in two languages.
  • Remuneration
    Annual Salary: (Net of Tax)
    75,093.- CHF - 99,863.- CHF without dependants
