Background

The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) is the principal institution responsible for the human dimension of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The ODIHR’s activities are implemented in 56 participating States in accordance with the ODIHR’s political mandate. Among the ODIHR’s main fields of activities are election observations as well as a large number of assistance projects in the areas of democratic institution building, the rule of law and human rights.

The ODIHR Human Rights Department is looking for two interns for a 6 months period starting January/February and April 2012.

The interns will be engaged in assisting two of the following programmes within the ODIHR Human Rights Department: the Monitoring and Response Unit, the Capacity Building Unit, the Human Rights, Gender and Security Unit, the Anti-Trafficking Unit and the Human Rights and Anti-Terrorism Programme.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Assisting in monitoring the implementation of Human Dimension commitments by the OSCE participating States including undertaking research and analysis of human rights developments as well as specific issues of work related to the above-mentioned programs; Writing and/or assisting in the preparation of written material including reports, memoranda, briefing papers and/or documents on general or specific issues and/or specific countries or regions on human rights issues, including priority questions within programmatic activities; Assisting in the preparation and organization of any meetings/conferences/events for which the above-mentioned programs may be responsible; Assisting in the implementation of any project or task, including activities and events, of the above-mentioned programs; Note-taking; Performing other related tasks as assigned.

Necessary Qualifications

Students in the final year of higher education (university or other accredited institution) at graduate or postgraduate level in political sciences, international relations, law, international human rights law or other related fields; Previous exposure and/or experience in dealing with human rights issues in an asset; Good working knowledge of English, both oral and written; knowledge of Russian is highly desirable; Proven competence in research and analytical writing; Demonstrable organizational, communication and reporting skills; Cultural sensitivity and judgment; Ability to operate Windows applications, including word processing and e-mail.

For the duration of the internship the interns will be covered with life, accident and disability insurance at the cost of the OSCE/ODIHR. The interns will also be able to participate in a group health insurance scheme at their own expense. The OSCE/ODIHR is unable to pay any remuneration or bear expenses incurred by the interns during their stay in Warsaw or for travel to or from the place(s) of assignment.

The internship lasts six months. It does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE.
