Boat Captain Conakry

Rio Tinto is a leading international mining group headquartered in the UK. Rio Tinto's business is in finding, mining and processing mineral resources. Major products are aluminium, copper, diamonds, energy (coal and uranium), gold, industrial minerals (borax, titanium dioxide, salt) and iron ore.
The Simandou Project in South-East Guinea is a large development project within Rio Tinto Iron Ore's portfolio. It will consist of developing a deep water Port, extensive rail infrastructure and a large mine. More information can be found on www.riotintosimandou.com.
The boat Captain has to provide operational support to the project, especially related to the construction of the deep sea port.
The Role:
Reporting to Manager Operations, Conakry and leading a team of 8 people you will be accountable for:
- Safety of the boat and its crew
- Ensuring that the impact of operations upon the marine environment is minimized
- All Safety, Quality, Pollution Control and contingency planning manuals and statutory regulations governing his responsibilities
- Ensuring that any crew joining are given practice in emergency and safety procedures including a familiarization tour as soon as possible
- Ensuring that adequate protective clothing and safety equipment is provided onboard and worn as required
- The Simandou boat and its annexes
- The sage navigation of the boat at all times
- Ensuring that charts and publications in use onboard are current and that the desk logbook is updated
- Ensuring that navigational instruments and communication systems are correctly serviced and functional
- Taking appropriate measures to ensure safe passing distances off dangers to navigation having full regard to the prevailing condition and draft in relation to the available depth of water
The position will have an important impact to the operation as it will support the contractor who will be in charge of the construction of the new port.
The position is a roster position 4 weeks on site and 2 weeks off.
A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Marine permit for commercial transport
- Significant experience in navigating a ship for commercial purposes
- Experience in managing marines
- Fluent in French and English
