Basic Function:

This is a senior level development position in the Foreign Policy Program (FP), the largest research Program at Brookings with 11 Centers and Initiatives, 2 overseas international offices, and a current budget of $25M+. The FP Director of Development develops and implements overall fundraising strategy in collaboration with the FP Vice President and Director; establishes and develops relationships with current and potential donors, members of the Board of Trustees, and the Program Leadership Committee (PLC); and leads a professional fundraising team of 6 with responsibility for meeting annual revenue requirements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

65% Strategic Planning and Fundraising:

- Partner with VP to set fundraising goals and to create and implement strategies for fundraising from foundations, corporations, individuals, and governments.

- Identify and build relationships with prospects including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities involving VP and scholars.

- Represent FP in meetings with prospects and donors; manage follow-up for donor meetings with VP and scholars.

- Build a portfolio of top prospects; sustain a high volume of contact and involvement with prospective donors, including face-to-face visits.

- Establish and meet fundraising targets in both cash and commitments.

- Oversee communication with and implement programs for the PLC, a group of high profile contributors with significant institutional relationships.

- Collaborate with the Development Office (DEV) and other research Program Development staff to develop and integrate FP fundraising activities into institutional strategies.

- Develop proposals and solicitation strategies with scholars; coordinate submissions process to ensure quality, readability, consistent voice, and adherence to funder guidelines, interests, and programs.

- Oversee development of marketing materials in coordination with FP Director of Communications.

- Schedule and participate in meetings as necessary with FP Center directors and staff to discuss programmatic direction and to report on key fundraising activities.

- Engage in the intellectual life of Brookings in order to articulate the priorities of FP and Brookings research and to stay abreast of major developments.

35% Management:

- Lead, oversee, and manage day-to-day activities of FP Development team, including recruitment, training, and mentoring of Development staff, delegation of responsibilities among the team, and promotion of efficient communications within the team.

- Manage FP development budget in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Administration (DFA).

- Maintain complete files on funders, including all correspondence, proposals, and reports.

- Oversee tracking of existing and potential commitments in conjunction with Program DFA; oversee tracking and coordination of fundraising efforts and contacts undertaken by VP/Director and individual FP scholars.

- Develop fundraising reports for VP and other Brookings staff as needed.

- Coordinate review and approval of funding proposals with Grants Administration, Accounting, and DEV.

- In collaboration with Program Communications staff, coordinate outreach to current and prospective donors regarding FP events and publications to ensure maximum fundraising impact.

- Guide staff in identification and research of new prospects; provide VP/Director and Brookings President with donor information and briefings as needed or requested.

- Stay informed about philanthropic, social, and educational trends as well as best practices related to fundraising.


Qualifications


Education/Experience Requirements:

BA degree required (MA preferred in international relations, foreign policy, political science, or a related field); 10 years of proven major gift fundraising experience; team management experience.

Knowledge Requirements:

- Proven ability to raise major gifts from individuals, corporations, and/or foundations.

- Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.

- Ability to work effectively with various constituencies, including immediate team members, high net worth individuals, corporate leaders, foundation staff, Board members, and scholars.

- Availability for some travel.

- Current authorization to work for any employer in the U.S.

Preferred

- Foreign policy interest and experience; familiarity with foreign policy issues and international relations.

- Familiarity with nexus between budgets and funds raised.

- Knowledge of key academic, business, foundation, and/or community leaders.

- Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge.
