PHYTOMEDICINE (FACULTY OF SCIENCE)

DST/NRF Research Chairs

The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) is aimed at increasing scientific research capacity through the development of human capacity and stimulating the generation of new knowledge. The Tshwane University of Technology was awarded six tier 1 research chairs in 2012 and is calling for candidates to fill the positions for these CHAIRS as described below for phase 2 call.

The Research Chair needs to have strong research expertise in the following aspects of the field of phytomedicine research: Quality control (eg chromatography and natural product chemistry), safety (eg herb drug interactions) and efficacy (eg bio-availability). The proposed research chair will adopt a multidisciplinary approach of combining the benefi ts of innovative technology with South Africa’s indigenous knowledge and rich biodiversity to participate competitively in the development of a knowledge-based bioeconomy.

Ideally the candidate should have experience in engaging with the industry in relation to commercialisation of phytomedicines. The incumbent should have a PhD in Botany or Pharmacy with a thorough knowledge of natural product sciences and experience in the pharmaceutical domain.
