Video Operator/Editor in Woking, Surrey


The Video Operator/Editor is a key position in helping Plan’s Communications Department tell the story of Plan vividly by sourcing and producing quality video and multi-media material for media, National Offices and website use.
Dimensions of Role:
With the Global Video Unit Producer, identify opportunities for promoting Plan’s core program work through filming – producing engaging, accurate and innovative media materials which bring that work to life & motivate fundraisers, supporters and media.
Support Plan’s core campaigns through film – to help promote key messages to elevate the campaign’s profile in advocacy, fundraising and media circles and increase awareness and audience.
This post is not a budget holder and has no reports.
Key End Results and typical Responsibilities:
•Being part of the Emergency On-call Rota - being deployed and supporting Disaster Communications work in the field when needed, often at short notice. This is to support emergency fundraising efforts and provide material for the organisation as a whole. •With the Media Manager and Producer, identify and plan for opportunities to strengthen, update and improve Plan’s stock of promotional films on thematic areas – e.g. Updating ‘corporate films’; ‘What is Plan?’, films on girls etc to ensure material is fresh and timely. •(With the GVU Producer) To communicate and update the organisation as a whole about upcoming film trips, materials and to engage with NOs and others about their film needs. •To support, advise on technical matters and provide materials if possible for National Offices, Country Offices and Regional colleagues- responding to inquiries in a timely, professional manner. •Source, identify and arrange licensing for soundtracks and ensure use throughout the organisation is appropriate. •When required, to support Internal Communications and other departments with their video needs – providing either professional filming or editing support or advising on commissioning to ensure quality standards are met. e.g. producing CEO’s video messages, supporting with Plan’s annual Global Awards. •Working with the Media Librarian and Media Manager – ensure that stock footage and materials are backed up, catalogued and securely stored. •Work with the press team when needed to provide footage for broadcast & web media requests to promote Plan’s program work. Dealing with Problems:
•This is a busy film unit so the Video Operator must be able to effectively manage their own time and handle competing demands and needs from inside and outside the organisation. •With the Media Manager and video producer, they must be able to prioritise and be able to accurately estimate timelines and work plans for projects. •They must also be flexible and capable of changing work plans at short notice to meet demands. •You will need to be able to assist and advise on technical issues around film formats & resolutions etc; advise colleagues and provide direction on which type of media is appropriate for various platforms. Communications and Working Relationships:
This role has contact with a wide range of staff at all levels throughout the organization. The Video Operator should be comfortable working with all staff. There is high contact with field and program staff both within country offices and International Headquarters and also with the Communications Department staff. There is medium contact with (mainly Communications) staff from the National Offices.
Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours Required to Achieve Role’s Objectives:
Knowledge Knowledge of international development would be beneficial and experience of working in and with different cultures, particularly in the developing world. The person should be comfortable working with our in-house equipment: 5d mark 2 and accessories for filming, and Final Cut Pro 7 (especially FCP and Motion) for editing. Experience in compression/encoding audio and video a must. Relevant work experience in a broadcast/video production facility
Skills This person should be an accomplished camera operator and editor who is comfortable with a range of equipment and systems. Ideally, it should be someone who has worked for some years in either a similar commercial or voluntary sector role and who is accustomed to the demands of a busy film unit. Communicating with people from different cultures and time zones Strong creative skills and ideas and the ability to work closely with others – working either with a director or producer. Strong team skills and the ability to work well under pressure with others is needed. Experience working with experts in post-production on sound, and online editsis also needed Fluent in English (both written and verbal). French and/or Spanish desirable.

Physical Environment and Demands: The working environment varies from office – based at the International Headquarters in Woking where there is a purpose-built edit suite, to working in the field. There is frequent, scheduled travel (usually at least one field filming visit per quarter) – coupled with additional travel to the field, often at short notice. The field work is demanding, involving long days, travel and subsistence in often challenging circumstances. The work can be quite physical as it involves transporting and setting up equipment in varying climates etc.
