UNHCR Geneva Research/Knowledge Management/Innovation Intern

Research/Knowledge Management/Innovation Intern Operational Solutions and Transition Section, Division of Programme Support and Management UNHCR Geneva
Purpose To create a repository of innovations, technologies and organisations which will inform and guide UNHCR’s future engagement with partners and contribute to finding innovative solutions for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the areas of livelihoods, environment and durable solutions.
Background UNHCR’s Operational Solutions and Transition Section (OSTS), as part of the Division of Programme Support and Management (DPSM), provides programming support to field operations in the areas of, among others, sustainable livelihoods and environment. Concrete examples of innovative solutions UNHCR has been promoting include the provision of solar energy for refugee camps, fuel efficient stoves, pro-poor value chains, inclusive business, community technology access programmes, and the like. In an effort to map and expand its resources and network of partners in these areas, OSTS will undertake a review of social innovations and new technologies as well as companies, foundations, academia and organisations which have come up with approaches that are being used (or can be adapted for use) in a humanitarian context. Ideally, OSTS aims to create a searchable database of resources and innovations relating to its fields of expertise, including an interactive platform through which best practices can be shared throughout UNHCR and with partners.
Responsibilities The intern will be in charge of independently researching the latest developments in social innovation and technology as well as identifying companies, organisations, foundations, academia and the private sector which have come up with practical, tested approaches in areas of interest to OSTS.
Output •A searchable database of innovative approaches, technologies and the organisations, foundations, companies and academia that have knowledge and expertise relating to sustainable livelihoods and environmental issues •Possibly and depending on the skills of the intern: an interactive platform on which information relating to database content and best practices can be shared
Requirements • Graduate student (preferably technology, business) • Very strong research and analytical skills (especially internet research, search engines) • Excellent command of English, working knowledge of French desirable • Experience in computing, database design and management, web development • Strong interest in development/humanitarian issues, social enterprise and innovation
Commitment Full time for at least 6 months, starting ASAP. The intern will be placed at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
What we offer The selected candidate will obtain first-hand experience working in a dynamic UN organization and gain insights into the development of longer-term solutions for refugees and other displaced populations. S/he will be able to substantially contribute to the promotion of new approaches, partnerships and technologies within UNHCR programmes and learn about the exciting and increasingly important interplay of aid and development.
