Literacy Director, Nepal

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. It is an INGO with its head office in San Francisco, USA and currently working in 10 countries of Asia and Africa.
In Nepal, we believe that the change is possible if our children became educated. If we support children to improve reading skills and habit at their early stage, they will be lifelong independent readers. Being inspired with this notion, as of now, we, together with our partners, have supported to establish over 3500 school libraries, published 231 children books for quality learning materials to read, constructed over 500 schools to improve school environments. In addition, to improve reading skills of early graders, we have been implementing Early Grade Reading and Writing Instruction Program in 80 schools. Under our Girls Education Program, we have been providing financial, material, academic & life skills education support to more than 3000 girls from underprivileged families to complete secondary education and beyond. We are at growing stage and currently developing our expansion strategy to expand our program. We have a team of around 100 people, geographically dispersed and dedicated directly working with RtR. Our programs are being implemented through 9 partner NGOs in 11 districts.
We are looking for a dynamic, experienced and creative Nepali citizen for the position of “LITERACY DIRECTOR” which is very senior position in Room to Read. This position is responsible for overseeing Room to Read’s Country Office Literacy program. The Literacy program currently includes Room to Read’s School Library, School Construction, Book Publishing and Reading and Writing Instruction programs, but increasingly will evolve over the next few years as a single, integrated Literacy program. The Director will provide technical guidance, oversight; direction and support to the Literacy Program. The position will share supervisory responsibility of the RtR field based teams and PNGOs and closely collaborate with the Program Operation Director. The key selection criteria are:
  • Master’s degree required in a related field of study (e.g. MA, MSS, MPA, or MSc in International Education, Development Studies, Education, or Early Childhood Development) from recognized university;
  • Minimum of 8 years of work experience in a field focused on primary education levels, with a minimum of three years in a senior management capacity;
  • Experience working with government system for primary education;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Strong planning, supervisory, and management skills.
