Scientific Program Officer, Diagnostics Development

The Diagnostics Group in the Technology Solutions Global Program at PATH conducts research and development, technical evaluation, introduction, and technology transfer of low-cost, rapid, novel and easy to use diagnostic tests that are appropriate for use in developing country health systems. We are seeking motivated candidates with solid background in the pathobiology, infectious disease and malaria or diagnostics development to play a key role as a Seattle-based Scientific Program Officer in a newly funded project focused on diagnostics in support of radical cure of Plasmodium vivax. The project specifically will support the development and evaluation of diagnostic tests for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Responsibilities include:
- Assess current and pipeline G6PD diagnostics for their suitability in informing Plasmodium vivax case management.
- Develop technical briefs to support technology assessment and solicitation of proposals.
- Support and monitor the development of suitable G6PD diagnostics.
- Quickly synthesize technical literature and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop reports and recommendations.
- Manage and oversee junior laboratory staff in designing experiments, performing technical work, and maintaining data integrity.
- Lead and/or contribute to the preparation of project reports for donors and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Identify funding sources, prepare grant applications within the existing portfolio structure; assist in the creation of new grant proposals based on G6PD project work.
- Domestic or international travel up to 30%.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and proactive with the ability to learn quickly in a new environment.
- An excellent communicator (both written and verbal), amenable to achieving goals as part of a diverse multidisciplinary team, and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and able to adapt to new computer-based applications as needed.
- PhD in life sciences.
- Seven or more years of relevant experience in life sciences laboratory-based clinical research.
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing research or implementation projects.
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate protocols, data summaries, and quantitative analyses.
- Experience evaluating diagnostics in lab or field-based settings is preferred.
- Some working experience in South East Asia/India would be beneficial but not required.
