PATH’s global presence is managed by the International Development team through country program leaders, country managers and regional program managers. These country leaders play the critical role of coordinating PATH’s engagement in each country, building strong relationships with national partners and stakeholders (government, private sector, NGO; donors and foundations) and helping PATH to establish robust platforms for identifying, developing, adapting, and introducing both technological and social innovations for delivery of community-based services and interventions. 

The International Development Leadership team consists of the vice-president, who has overall responsibility for PATH’s in-country engagements and three direct reports who work across the International portfolio and across PATH to ensure successful program integration, operations and focus.  There is a Director of International Operations & Support who focuses on country program operational excellence and integration with PATH’s overall operations strategies. There is a Managing Director who provides leadership and managerial support for the country programs. The third leadership role is the Director of Strategic Initiatives. This position will also report to the Vice President of International Development while working closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and strategy team to ensure solid links with the institutional strategy.

The Director of Strategic Initiatives is responsible for ensuring focus through strategic development of new country programs (landscaping opportunities, building trusted advisor relationships with government leaders and developing partnerships with key stakeholders for new work in new locations).  He/she will operate as a project manager to oversee PATH’s transitions as the organization evolves to ensure focus on countries where PATH can make the most impact on addressing health equity issues.  Specifically this position will focus on managing the issues associated with country transitions including; opening, closing and transitioning offices and supporting new cross-country program initiatives as part of PATH’s strategic plan. 

The Director of Strategic Initiatives will lead PATH’s entry into new geographies and support the country teams’ work to introduce new technologies within PATH’s existing and expanding global presence.  The director will work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer to research and recommend strategies for new country development. He/she will help design and provide project management and leadership on future country development as well as current countries.

He/she will have a good knowledge of country health systems and sources of data to enable analysis of market dynamics to determine strategies introducing and integrating innovative technologies and methodologies into health systems to build capacity and drive long term health impact. The Director of Strategic Initiatives will be responsible for developing critical public, private and non-profit sector partnerships. This position reports directly to the Vice President of International Development. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with the Strategy Team to identify and shape specific tools to support country-led strategic planning processes.
  • Work with programs to ensure the toolkit of PATH-wide technical and innovation resources are developed and made available to country programs for building their programs
  • In collaboration with country and program leadership, provide support for the development of strategic plans that align with institutional objectives  
  • Provide support and lead the analysis of the market dynamics for PATH’s strategy in countries where needs and funding models are undergoing significant change, such as moving to middle-income status.
  • Build the business case to enter a new county or grow PATH’s investment in a country from a project office to a country program.
  • Assist country leaders in identifying consultants with skills such as project management, new business models and partner engagement to work within countries and regions
  • Represent PATH to relevant ministries, international agencies, collaborators, other NGOs, and the donor community as needed.
Required Skills

  • Knowledge of public health, health systems management and development economics
  • Demonstrated experience building business cases, strategic plans and operationalizing them in low resource settings and demonstrated ability to grow this capacity in country.
  • Good understanding of the health technology innovation landscape
  • Demonstrated experience developing partnerships across multiple stakeholders with different motivations and priorities
  • Proven ability to drive for results in the context of ambiguity
  • Demonstrated political savvy and organizational agility
  • Effective working across cultures in managing vision and purpose as well as through interpersonal relationships
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex organizational changes which could include; start-ups,incubations and divestitures and then operationalize these changes
  • Strong Project Management experience, PMI Certification preferred
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience designing and implementing public health projects/programs and ability to integrate the knowledge into business cases for new country engagements
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 30%.

Required Experience

Advanced degree in business, management, public health or related field plus a minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience. Multi-country experience strongly preferred. Experience managing corporate and other private sector donor relationships preferred. Experience working effectively with government counterparts at central and local levels. Experience in program representation and program development.
