Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Program and Business Development, the Business Development Manager will play an important role in exploring and diversifying new program and business opportunities from institutional donors, conducting donor analysis needed for business plan and contributing to Plan Canada grow as per its strategic plan.
 
Main Responsibilities:
(i)             Actively identify and seek to maximize the potential opportunities that are in line with Plan’s Business;
(ii)            Conduct the initial assessment, review of donor requirements and analysis of the potential feasibilities of the initiatives based on Plan context, expertise and experiences at various levels;
(iii)           Engage with Plan Canada colleagues and Staff from the field (Country Offices and Regional Offices) based on the approved business opportunities;
(iv)           Play a key role into the design of the Expressions of Interests, Concept Notes and/or Proposals as necessary based on agreed actions;
(v)            Maintain a reliable system of tracking and monitoring business development data and knowledge management of donors/partners and their requirements.
 
The position is preferably based in Ottawa with frequent trips to the field to different Plan Country Offices based on the needs
 
1.     Business Opportunities: Identification and Detailed Analysis:  (70%)
  • Explore new program and business opportunities from institutional donors as per Plan Canada’s business plan and in agreement with theDirector of Program and Business Development
  • Help formulate, review and revise country/regional program business plans, as well as organizational strategies and priorities
  • Develop, review and regularly update Plan Canada institutional donor opportunities mapping by theme, geographical coverage and priorities
  • Contribute to/Lead the development, writing and packaging of applications to respond to RFPs/RFAs from bilateral and multilateral agencies, including but not limited to Regional/Global Development Banks.
  • Initiate concept note development and some full proposal development based on capabilities and agreed actions
  • Work closely with relevant Plan staff members in Canada and in the field and engages with the donor to further explore and negotiate on the opportunity
  • Develop and maintain high quality working relationships with donors and counterparts from different part of Plan and its partner organizations
  • Manage the internal processes and documentation related to new business development
 
2.     Networking and donor relationship management:  (20%)
  • Represent where appropriate Plan Canada at relevant forums and networks,
  • Ensure successful on-going donor relationship management which align with Plan Canada strategic plan
  • Contribute to ensuring positive relationships with Plan field offices
  • Attends different program meetings and provides inputs for overall organizational growth and sustainability
  • Proactively develop successful donor relationships in accordance with Plan’s values, principles and practices and commitment towards child rights / child protection
 
3.     Business development Monitoring and Knowledge Management:  (10%)
  • Stay abreast of international development, policies and best practices with particular attention to issues pertaining to global change, children and poverty.
  • Organize forums to share successes and program learning with donors, partners and peers
  • Managing the tracking system for monitoring of new business development opportunities in Plan Canada
  • Develop a knowledge bank of donor requirements and systems by donor

  • Specific skills in donor-related communication: from opportunity identification, to concept note and full proposal writing process
  • Ability to maintain strategic vision and link with everyday work
  • Proven and advanced presentation and negotiation skills
  • Proven skills in proposal writing, innovation and rights based programming
  • Proven skills in results based management approaches
  • A working knowledge of donor requirements and formats
  • Strong knowledge management and sharing capacity
  • Demonstrate high degree of professionalism and integrity
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a collegial manner in a team based context

Requirements
  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in business administration, international relations or similar relevant to the position
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in international development
  • Proven track record in grant acquisition and donor relationship management (from study, training and practical experience)
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills in English and French will be an asset
  • Good familiarity, networking and working relationships with different donors and other partner organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to review and synthesize information and produce appropriate documents
  • Ability to travel internationally frequently, up to 50% of the time (a valid passport will be required)
  • Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Power Point), MS Project and internet use
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Able to work in a team enviornment, pitch in attidute a must
  • Knowledge of child rights-based approach to programming
  • Fluent in oral and written English (French and Spanish assets)
