Museum of Natural History and Archaeology
Department of Natural History

Associate professor in quantitative ecology

The NTNU Museum of Natural History and Archaeology has an available position as Associate Professor in biological diversity. The position is permanent and available from 1 March 2014. The position will be at the Department of Natural History as part of the Conservation Biology Group research group. The successful candidate will conduct his/her research within quantitative ecology with emphasis on studies of spatio-temporal distribution of species and processes governing these distributions. He/she will be responsible for the Museum's data from long-term time series on taxa such as plants, vertebrates and invertebrates. Questions related to biodiversity in relation to climate change will be central. The Museum is hiring a new Associate Professor in order to strengthen the research in conservation biology, and to reach theMuseum's strategic goals.
The Associate Professor will be expected to perform tasks that normally apply to scientific positions at the NTNU Museum of Natural History and Archaeology within: 1) research in biological diversity, in this respect quantitative ecology, 2) being senior curator of data management of time series, 3) public outreach, 4) teaching at bachelor, masters, and PhD-levels, including supervision of MSc and PhD-students, 5) administration, including project administration.
The successful applicant will have a PhD in ecology and experience with studies of spatio-temporal data, and further fulfill the following qualifications:
  • Documented ability to publish in high impact international journals, and generate externally funded research projects.
  • Document ability, experience and motivation to initiate and run a strong and innovative research focusing on spatio-temporal data sets, and application of time series in research projects.
  • Can document experience in use of large data sets, experimental design, and modelling using relevant statistical tools.
  • Can document experience in teaching and supervising students. Pedagogical skills will be regarded as important when evaluating candidates.
  • Experience in multivariate, macro-ecological and/or biogeographical analyses will be an advantage.
  • The Museum's collections and long-term time series are mainly based on data from Nordic countries. Knowledge of taxa and nature from these areas will therefore be an advantage.
The Associate Professor will do administrative work, and should be prepared to undertake project administration at the department when needed. In this position collaboration with researchers across taxonomic groups and fields of competence will be important. Abilities and experience in administrative work as well as co-operative skills are therefore considered important when evaluating candidates for the position.

The research is facilitated through two research groups; the Conservation Biology Group and the Systematics and Evolution Group. The Systematics and Evolution Group has its research focus in general questions in systematics and evolutionary biology such as: speciation events, species discrimination, phylogeny, evolution of characters, and distribution of species. The Conservation Biology Group focuses on process related questions (land and water use, plant animal interactions, habitat destruction and fragmentation) and the distribution of species in space and time. The group also have an applied research profile and works towards nature management authorities and stakeholders, at levels from populations to ecosystems. Research areas in common of the groups include biogeography/phylogeography and conservation biology.
For the position in quantitative ecology it is expected that the hired person will have research activity in close collaboration with colleagues in both research groups.
