PhD Position in material transport in oil wells (IVT-115/13)

The Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology (IVT) at the Norwegian University Science and Technology (NTNU) announce a vacant PhD position in the field of material transport. The project entitled “Advanced Wellbore Transport modeling – Knowledge building for the petroleum industry” is financed by the Research Council of Norway and several oil companies. The project involves totally three PhD positions in a close collaboration between Stavanger based UiS and IRIS and Trondheim based NTNU and SINTEF. Each position lasts for 3 years.

The position is administrated at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics, IVT Faculty. The main task of the PhD position is to understand the physics involved when drilled out cuttings are restricting the operation of pulling or lowering the drill string axially through an oil well, to mathematically model the surface tension in the drill string, and to compare the theoretical model results to field observations and to results from experimental investigations in the laboratory.

This specific position requires a Master’s degree or similar within either physics, material science and engineering, or mechanical/structural engineering. The applicants must be qualified for the doctoral program. The successful applicants are motivated and ambitious students with excellent grades. Proficiency to carry out goal-oriented work, good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results, and good cooperation abilities will be emphasized.
