Role Summary

Risk & Compliance Department. This department, made up largely of qualified lawyers, exists to manage the firm’s risk exposure and to provide advice to the Partners about a range of compliance issues.

Assisting locally in the London office (and as part of an international network) with the implementation of internal risk processes, particularly in the area of conflicts of interest, and other compliance requirements arising from relevant jurisdictional regulations (e.g. the Solicitors Regulation Authority Code of Conduct).

Key Responsibilities

Part of a team providing advice on risk issues and conflicts analysis covering the operations of the firm in all jurisdictions. The role holder will:
  • Analyse and identify potential conflict and confidential information issues arising from potential and existing matters.
  • Advise on and assist with the implementation of solutions to resolve conflicts and confidentiality issues including, where appropriate, assistance with drafting consent letters and erecting appropriate information barriers.
  • Assist with the development, administration, monitoring and maintenance of policies and procedures and ensure conflicts, risk and related issues are dealt with consistently across the firm.
  • Answer queries from partners, fee earners and staff at all levels relating to the interpretation of relevant legislation, regulation and firm policies pertaining to conflicts of interest, regulatory compliance and, to a lesser extent, anti-money laundering.
  • Undertake due diligence and assessment on new clients.
  • Carry out other discrete conflicts and compliance research or projects and auditing as necessary.
  • Deliver ad hoc training on risk issues and otherwise be an ambassador for the team within the wider firm.

Requirements

  • This role will suit a qualified lawyer with at least 2 years Post Qualification Experience in a highly regarded commercial law firm or bank. A sound and broad knowledge of the law is required, with preference given to experience in large commercial transactions.
  • Requires a comprehensive knowledge of applicable ethical rules and guidelines and related compliance issues applicable to international law firms, although it is expected that for most candidates this will be developed on the job. Keenness to keep abreast of changes to relevant legislation and guidance.
  • A high level of IT skills is essential and must include familiarity with applications such as Word, Outlook and Excel. Web-based and general research skills essential.

  • Must possess initiative and a combination of confidence, presence and a diplomatic manner.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills necessary. Used to working to very high standards of accuracy and efficiency, but balanced with a practical, common sense approach.
  • Effective written and oral communication is crucial to successful job performance. Excellent English skills are a key requirement; other language skills helpful but not required.
  • Able to work consistently on the more routine aspects of compliance work. Close attention to detail.
  • Strong team player - reliable, flexible, helpful and willing to work beyond contractual hours from time to time.
  • Excellent interpersonal and client service skills are required, as is a positive approach and the ability to effectively work and liaise confidently and competently with all levels of staff to assist with the resolution of issues.
  • Resourceful, possessing initiative and able to work autonomously with a high personal motivation, whilst also being an effective member of a team
  • Fast thinker, quick learner and able to work effectively under time pressure. Must be able to prioritise competing work demands and multi task.
  • Ability to promote the value of a compliance culture.
  • Resilience, confidence and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
