Medical Logistics Coordinator - Emergency Health Unit
24 month fixed term contract
Save the Children are seeking an experienced and dedicated Medical Logistics Coordinator to provide expertise to the deployment of one of the three PHT modules (primary health clinic; diarrheal disease module; mass vaccination) with particular focus on the management of the drug supply chain and medical equipment set up.
The Emergency Health Unit is an ambitious, high priority new initiative within Save the Children which has seen us invest in specialist health and operations teams, covering both primary and secondary health care across the world. The unit ensures a pre-standing emergency health capacity, including medical supplies, logistics and skilled medical personnel to deploy anywhere in the world in the event of a major disaster or conflict.
Primary health teams are resourced to deliver primary health clinics, cholera responses and mass vaccination programmes in emergencies supporting country programmes and larger SC humanitarian responses. The teams are able to deploy as required anywhere in the world but each team has a specific geographical focus, this position is focused on West and Central Africa and proportion of emergency preparedness work will be in this region.
As the interface between clinicians and logisticians, you will engage the needs of both to ensure that emergency health responses are supplied with the critical clinical supplies required and that the supplies have been appropriately sourced, shipped and stored. You will be able to guide both clinicians and logisticians in selecting the right items or suppliers and ensure that value for money is maintained. This role will be critical to our work, helping us save lives and restore the health of those whom Save the Children is treating.
To be successful in this highly critical role, you will have previous experience as a medical logistician in several developing country locations, preferably in disaster response settings. You will have experience in setting up an accountable cold chain and general supply chain to remote areas, with the ability to cover other aspects of the logistics function and be self-sufficient in IT and communications. You will also have:
- Fluency in French, with Arabic, Kiswahili or another language relevant to West Africa
- The ability to improvise when scoping an appropriate response at speed in the absence of solid information
- Appropriate experience in humanitarian field deployment logistics within an international NGO at senior officer or co-ordinator level
- Experience supporting an emergency health response
- Demonstrable flexibility and the ability to deploy to overseas locations at very short notice
A familiarity with West and Central Africa and previous experience supporting a Cholera/Diarrhoeal response or a mass vaccination programme is desirable.
