POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Title: Research Associate, Center for Preventive Action
Location: Washington, D.C. Office
Salary: Based on education and experience

CFR's Studies Program is one of the country's largest foreign policy think tanks, with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program's aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

CFR.org is CFR's award-winning website and a leading source of foreign policy analysis. It publishes a mix of resources, including interactive Crisis Guides, Daily News Briefs, Backgrounders, and interviews with foreign policy leaders. CFR.org collaborates closely with CFR's think tank on its content and features insights from CFR fellows in a number of ways, including First Takes, Expert Briefs, and video interviews.

The Research Associate will work under the direction of the Director and Senior Fellow on projects related to conflict prevention and crisis areas within the Center for Preventive Action.

The major responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative research for Center for Preventive Action publications as well as articles and book chapters authored by the Director and Senior Fellow
  • Coordinating events, including suggesting and researching potential topics, determining appropriate invitees, preparing invitations, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
  • Shepherding reports and articles through the publication process. Drafting, proofreading, formatting, and editing documents for internal use and external publication
  • Managing budgets, including tracking monthly statements, monitoring grant information, writing reports and requests, creating and updating Excel spreadsheets, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement
  • Providing administrative support to the Director and Senior Fellow, including scheduling appointments, handling phone calls, making travel arrangements, and drafting correspondence
  • Supporting other Fellows and departments, upon request

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in International Relations, Political Science, Economics, or related social science field, with high academic achievement; strong knowledge of global affairs required.
  • Experience with budget management and/or website maintenance preferred
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and high attention to detail
  • Related internship or professional experience
  • Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and internet research
