Emergency Cholera Medical Doctor

BACKGROUND: IRC is present in Eastern Chad since 2004, providing support to Sudanese refugees. Two IRC sites are located Eastern Chad, with well established health programs in refugee camps: one in Bahai (45 minutes flight from Abéché) and another one in Hadjer Hadid (30 minutes flight from Abeche). Since September 3rd 2011, the IRC has been implementing an emergency cholera response in Abeche town, Eastern Chad.

SCOPE: IRC Chad is currently looking for a Medical Doctor, based in town of Abeche, responsible for running a CTC (cholera Treatment Centre) set up within the regional hospital of Abeche. We need a person with excellent medical technical skills, innovative problem solving skills, and someone who can work well within the overall context of harsh climatic and sometimes insecure conditions. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Ensure the cholera complications are taken care of at the cholera treatment centre (CTC); • Perform daily monitoring of cholera patients at the CTC ; • Ensure all activities and services are performed according to national and WHO protocols; • Support the IRC cholera team in the running of the CTC in Abeche; • Support the District Sanitaire of Abeche with the Oral Rehydration Unit; • Be ready to respond to CTC on-duty nurse calls, including late in the night; • Help with the technical coaching of the CTC paramedical staff and surrounding health centre staff by conducting educational supervision in close collaboration with the Abeche Health District team: participation in the training of paramedical staff on handling/managing cholera cases and ensuring patient oral rehydration is carried out properly both in the CTC and the peripheral health centers.
• Organize the health statistics collection in order to issue the periodical reports. • Perform any other cholera outbreak related job requested by your supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS: • Medical doctor with at least two (2) years experience in a hospital setting ; • Sound experience in cholera prevention and treatment;; • Proved similar (cholera) experience in humanitarian or development context; • Good computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc); • Excellent communication and training skills; • Report writing skills; • Spoken and written French a requirement, English and Arab an advantage; • Ability to live and work under hard climatic and security conditions.

SPECIFIC SECURITY SITUATION/HOUSING : Staff in Chad must comply with all IRC Chad security policies and procedures applicable to international staff. Accommodation will be provided and will be as comfortable as the emergency circumstances allow. The position is unaccompanied.
