Your Job

You monitor, analyze and communicate around all developments internally - both at European as well as at national level - and likewise help develop and communicate our views to the external stakeholders such as trade associations, European commission and Parliament ● You work together with the Government Relation managers and follow up on specific policy areas and on European developments ● You anticipate business risks and give advice to the different Cargill business lines in the EMEA region.

As part of our government relations department you will work closely with one of the Government Relations Managers and collaborate with government relations colleagues and the wider Cargill Corporate Affairs team.

Major Tasks:

  • Follow proactively on different policy initiatives at EU and national level. You need to understand who is behind new initiatives and why, think those issues through and work together with the government relations managers in order to communicate developments internally and propose a lobbying strategy. The strategies will then be executed jointly together with Business Managers and Senior Government Relations and Corporate Affairs colleagues.
  • Be Cargill’s eyes and ears in the Commission and the European Parliament in different policy areas. You follow up and understand how other stakeholders are positioning themselves in this debate and participate in different working group discussions led by Cargill’s main Trade Associations in this field.
  • Strive to detect issues before they become hot and deflect their impact on Cargill. As such, you need to be very analytical and both attentive to details and very aware of the main picture, as Cargill’s businesses are very diversified, and include, in addition to oil, starch and cocoa, grain trade, ethanol, sweeteners and malt.

Your Profile

  • An academic degree, but the field of study is irrelevant
  • A previous knowledge of environment, food and/or agricultural policies would be a distinct advantage
  • 2-3 years experience in a national association with European exposure or a European Trade Association or in the Public Affairs department of a large multinational/agency or in a European government institution
  • Hands-on, able to work autonomously but with the sense to know when to ask for help/advise
  • A team player is crucial
  • Diplomatic. Be able to argue gently and persuasively
  • Have a political mind to understand what a written text really means and why
  • Clearly, good knowledge of the EU and its decision-making process is crucial
  • The international nature of Cargill’s business implies to work cross-border
  • Potential to grow
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both orally and in writing. A good command of French and/or Dutch/German would be a plus
