Internship: Japan Partnership Unit, Partnerships Bureau

Japan Partnership Unit of the Partnerships Bureau is committed to strengthening partnerships with Japan (the public and private sectors and civil society organizations in Japan) by playing a coordination and facilitation role within UNDP and between UNDP and Japan. Japan Partnership Unit, with close collaboration with the UNDP Tokyo Office, undertakes a wide range of activities including support for resource mobilization and management of Japan’s financial contributions to UNDP’s programmes/projects.

Japan Partnership Unit also facilitates UNDP’s access to the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security and strengthens multi-bi cooperation with Japanese development partners (mainly the Government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)).

The intern is expected to learn about the various partnerships between UNDP and Japan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Special Advisor and direct supervision of the Policy Advisor of the Japan Partnership Unit staff, the intern will assist in creating an on-line data platform of Japan-funded projects and project monitoring. The main output would be a databank on the Unit’s Intranet site (uploading, archiving and organizing documents) on Japanese contributions to UNDP. The intern will perform other activities to be undertaken by the Unit as follows:

Data compilation

  • Upload and organize the documents on Japan’s contributions to UNDP (agreements and reports) on the new Intranet site.
  • Create and update the database on the Japan-UNDP Partnership Fund and other Funds.

Coordination

  • Update the reporting status of projects funded by the Japan-UNDP Partnership Fund, and liaise with Country Offices to collect progress, final and financial reports.
  • Working with the Programme Associate, review projects funded by the UN Human Security Trust Fund and collect relevant documents from Country Offices and the UN/OCHA/Human Security Unit.
  • Perform other tasks as needed.

The intern is expected to learn about the various partnerships between UNDP and Japan.

Competencies

  • Strong computer skills (i.e. Sharepoint, MS Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Fluency in English necessary, and fluency in Japanese preferred
  • Interest in Japan’s ODA practices
  • Detail oriented.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a Master’s level program preferably in international development, business, economics, international relations, or public administration. Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of development.
  • Candidate must have medical coverage
  • Candidate does not receive payment or stipend for the duration of internship.
