Executive Secretary for Africa General Board of Global Ministries

The General Board of Global Ministries, the global mission agency of the United Methodist Church, is seeking an Executive Secretary for Africa. This position is based in New York City. Travel to Africa several times a year for a significant period of time is required.

The Executive Secretary for Africa will be responsible for fostering positive missional relationships with and among the partner churches and ecumenical agencies of Africa, which have traditional or developing partnerships with the United Methodist Church and the General Board of Global Ministries.

Though Methodist-affiliation is not required, qualified candidates must possess the ability to analyze and evaluate the context in which the Church is called to Christian ministry; develop and sustain collegial relationships and mission partnerships; and develop action plans for advocacy for global justice, peace, and freedom. The candidate should have some experience working in a Global, intercultural, and interfaith context.

Duties: Serve as liaison, develop resources, and coordinate the relationships among partner churches in Africa and the United States. Identify need (medical, educational, and admin as well as aviation) and suggest support (missionaries or volunteers, financial resources, and health professionals). Provide supervision, support, and oversight for missionaries assigned in the region including participation in selection and assignment, budget coordination and maintenance of missionary records, as required.

Organize round table discussions. Articulate and implement the goals and strategies of the General Board of Global Ministries. Continue to promote community renewal, church revitalization, and expansion among all mission partners of the region.

Requirements: Qualified applicants must be fluent in either French or Portuguese AND English and have lived and worked in a French-speaking or Portuguese speaking African country and have been steeped in those countries in cultural context. Applicants must have an understanding of NGO functions. The ideal candidate has done significant Mission work in Africa. However, we will consider candidates with experience in institutional NGO. Must have three to five years’ relevant experience.
