Junior Economists - Americas Desk and Poverty Reduction Unit

We are looking for two Junior Economists to carry out analytical work and to contribute to the Americas Desk unit for one, and to the Poverty Reduction Unit for the other. The selected person for the Americas Desk unit will focus especially on the themes of macroeconomics and human capital, within a cross-country, comparative perspective. The selected person for the Poverty Reduction Unit will focus on the key microeconomics topics, employment, gender, migration, institutions, and poverty reduction. Both will work under the supervision of the Head of their respective Unit.

Job duties
1. Research, analysis and drafting

• Contribute to ongoing research, analyses and policy conclusions.
• Provide support for presentations and internal communication.
• Draft key documents and presentations highlighting the analyses and policy conclusions, including Flagship Publications, Policy Insights, Policy Briefs and Development Centre Working Papers.

2. Statistical work and analysis

• Provide statistical support by collecting and carrying out initial interpretation of statistical documentation pertaining to the principal themes of the annual Latin American Economic Outlook for one and on Perspectives on Global Development for the other.
• Carry out research and statistical work, including applied econometric analysis.
• Experience in carrying quantitative analytical work with macro data, firm-level data and human capital databases (such as OECD-PISA) for the selected person for the Americas Desk Unit, and macro and micro data, household survey data and human capital databases (such as OECD-PISA) for the selected person for the Poverty Reduction Unit.

3. Liaison and outreach

• Establish and maintain professional contacts and build networks with officials in national administrations, researchers, other international organisations and member country Delegations.
• To establish projects of intellectual collaboration with other institutions and directorates within the organisation.
• Undertake other tasks as may be required.

Qualifications: education, experience, communication and languages

1. Education and experience

• A Master's degree in international and development economics.
• A Ph.D. in international and development economics would be an advantage.
• Good knowledge of the issues affecting the formulation of economic policies in developing countries and emerging economies (with a focus on Latin America for the selected person for the Americas Desk Unit)
• At least two year’s professional experience of directly relevant international experience in research and analytical activities.
• Candidates are also expected to have demonstrated an ability to conduct high-quality research.
• A record of relevant publications would be an advantage (peer-reviewed articles or book chapters) in the areas of : - macroeconomics, financial development and human capital formation for the selected person for the Americas Desk unit, - microeconomics, social development and human capital formation for the selected person for the Poverty Reduction Unit,
• Knowledge of widely-used software and econometric packages (such as Eviews, Stata, Matlab, SPSS, R).

2. Key competencies

• Outstanding analytical and drafting skills; ability to work quickly and produce concise, top-quality analyses and recommendations.
• Ability to analyse data and draft reports.
• Ability to address issues in a critical and analytical way, and to draw policy implications.
• Proven ability to exercise initiative and to adapt to a range of different projects and techniques.
• Proven experience in designing research proposals/projects in the context of research institutions/international organisations.
• Ability to work in a multicultural team and to adapt smoothly to changing working methods and technologies.
• Organisational skills, including the ability to plan and implement independent research. Ability to work efficiently with the capacity to prioritise tasks often according to tight deadlines.
• Demonstrated capacity for innovation, autonomy and self-motivation.
• Proficiency in the use of standard software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc ).

3. Communication and language skills

• Excellent drafting skills; proven ability to organise and summarise complex material.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work harmoniously with colleagues within and outside the Organisation and to work as part of a multicultural team.
• Excellent knowledge of one of the two official languages of the Organisation (English and French), including very good drafting ability in that language. Working knowledge of the other language.
• Knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese would be an additional advantage.
