Associate Scientist - Agricultural Economics

Reporting to IRRI's Global Coordinator of the International Network for Genetic Evaluation of Rice (INGER) and IRRI's Impact Assessment and Strategic Planning Specialist, the Associate Scientist will play a key role in a flagship ex post impact assessment of IRRI's crop genetic improvement activities. The position depends upon knowledge of crop genetic improvement and advanced skills in statistics and database management.

Major accountabilities/Responsibilities
• Develop/establish a database of the genealogy and genetic characteristics of all varieties released and adopted in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and the Philippines
• Prepare a survey questionnaire to be sent to rice breeding stations in 4 countries to collect information on the numbers of varieties released and crosses involved in the released varieties and the genetic traits obtained from each parent; monitor closely the responses from breeders to ensure complete and accurate information
• Manage and update the existing records as data are being collected through the survey questionnaires and other possible sources of information on varieties
• Analyze the parentage/pedigree of varieties released and widely adopted in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and the Philippines to identify IRRI genetic contributions
• Plan and undertake analysis of varietal release and other records to identify the traits (host plant resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, duration, yield potential and milling recovery rates) of varieties released and widely adopted in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and the Philippines
• Identify and analyze IRRI trait contributions through modern variety replacement. A complete genealogy of every rice variety will be established from data arising from the identification and analysis. Similarly a historical pattern of varietal adoption for each country will be established.
• Collaborate and liaise closely, with a high degree of analytical independence, with internal and foreign NARES partners and crop breeders to identify the traits associated with IRRI germplasm contributions
• Establish rapport with NARES and other stakeholders in the conduct and implementation of research
• Write and present papers arising from the research at local and international seminars and conferences, workshops and meetings and for publication in refereed journals

Qualification requirements
• Post Graduate Degree or equivalent in Ar Econ, Econ or Statistics, or Agronomy/Plant Breeding
• 3-5 years relevant experience
• English: Written and spoken
• Proficiency in the use of statistical analysis using primary and secondary level data, advanced knowledge of crop breeding methods and varietal release procedures; skilled in research management, surveys, training, and writing
