Director, Controller Africa Area

The Director, Controller Africa Area contributes to multi-year strategic plans and develops supporting operational plans. S/he monitors the progress and results of country office plans for the area. S/he advocates and engages in cross-functional actions and initiatives that are needed to improve our efficiency and effectiveness in achieving our mission. S/he models organizational change by facilitating change and new initiatives. S/he serves as a key advisor to area and finance senior management team on finance and accounting matters as they relate to area operations.

This position can be based in South Africa or Ethiopia.

Responsibilities

• Provides high quality financial and accounting support to Save the Children and ensures accurate and timely recording of accounting transactions. Reviews summarized field office activity (monthly finance report) to minimize agency risk. • Ensures compliance with legal and grant regulations and financial management policies and procedures. Monitors grants, contracts, sub-agreements and procurement. • Builds the financial systems and capacity of Save the Children to effectively manage its financial resources. Provides technical assistance to country offices. • Directly manages Save the Children's financial resources. Manages area controller's office budget. Provides accounting, payroll and financial management support to the area office. • Provides ongoing support and coaching to strengthen the area controller team's performance towards serving the stakeholders' needs. Sets performance objectives and develops action plans with direct reports to achieve goals.

Requirements • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in finance, accounting or related field. CPA or equivalent certification preferred • Minimum 8 years in finance and accounting with at least 3 years management experience • Solid understanding of USAID regulations and reporting requirements to include US Federal Government cost accounting standards as well as other donor priorities and technical requirements with a working knowledge and strong understanding of grant management and accounting principles • Ability to analyze and review financial reports and provide analysis regarding budget issues and grant close-out and reporting mechanisms • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required; proficiency in SUN systems is preferable • Ability to develop financial models that support the agency's overall fiscal goals and ensure that funds are processed accurately and division deadlines are met • Significant experience installing and maintaining manual and computerized accounting systems in a decentralized environment • Proven experience in supporting and troubleshooting accounting software and related hardware • Understanding of how record-keeping and reporting for one area or field office directly impacts other departments as well as the entire organization • Knowledge of Swahili, Amharic, and/or French is preferred Employee Type Regular Full-time
