Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

Fixed term for 2 years

3 to 5 sessions a week

Background:

This post has been established using Additional Cost of Teaching (ACT) funding. The successful applicant will provide support for curriculum development and delivery of a new strand within the undergraduate medical curriculum; Integrating Science and Specialties (ISS).

Integrating Sciences and Specialties

Within the undergraduate medical curriculum, ISS has evolved to help with the integration of teaching across the body systems and between clinical practice and basic sciences. A recent review of this element of the undergraduate curriculum made a number of recommendations for change. The aim of the changes is to integrate basic science with clinical teaching around the core clinical problems. Multimedia will be used to enhance the students learning.

Students will be encouraged to use their basic science knowledge to inform their decision making and their interpretation of symptoms signs and investigations. For its delivery it will link with the e- learning agenda and be a major part of the new education facility at Ninewells. ISS will contribute to meeting key objectives to be compliant with the requirements of the GMC Tomorrows Doctors 2009 in the appropriate outcomes. The successful applicant will support the implementation of these recommendations.

Principle Duties

The ISS Clinical Teacher will be an experienced clinician who can provide regular clinical and curriculum development support and teaching for ISS sessions.

Their role would be to:

  • To enhance the new ISS sessions by providing clinical time to take part in developing sessions which integrate science, are clinically relevant and support the core clinical problems.
  • Work with IT staff to utilise their skills in developing multi-media materials for teaching and provide the relevant clinical information they need
  • Take part in developing a method of assessment based on the ISS sessions
  • Provide face to face teaching within the ISS sessions
  • Take part in evaluating the ISS sessions
