Background / General description:
IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is the largest multilateral provider of financing for private enterprise in emerging markets. IFC provides loans, equity, structured finance and risk management tools as well as advisory services to build the private sector in developing countries. IFC invests in private sector projects that are financially and economically viable and have a substantial development impact. The Corporation is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It has three hubs in Sub-Saharan Africa (Johannesburg, Dakar, Nairobi) and several field offices. The Financial Markets Department, one of IFC’s several industry departments, supports projects in numerous financial subsectors, builds local financial institutions, develops local equity and debt markets and introduces new financing instruments. The goal is to develop efficient financial systems that will fuel economic growth in client countries and enhance IFC’s developmental impact. The Financial Markets Department is recruiting investment officers to join the Investment and Portfolio Team, which originates, manages and monitors IFC’s financial sector investments in Sub-Saharan Africa. The senior investment officer will report to the Financial Markets Manager, Sub-Saharan Africa.

Duties and Accountabilities:
The senior investment officer will lead IFC’s financial markets investment program in English-speaking West Africa, including: Supervising a small team of investment staff operating out of Lagos and Accra, including forming transaction teams and assigning specific deal-related responsibilities; Ensuring quality in the origination and structuring of new transactions; Managing high level client relationships and provide insight into sector developments in client countries to anticipate new investment opportunities and performance issues; Guiding portfolio related activities, including waivers, rights issues, restructurings and exit recommendations. Lead in the preparation of country strategy papers, briefs and project profiles.

Selection Criteria:
10+ years of relevant experience in the financial sector, including a solid operational understanding of commercial banks and other financial entities in emerging markets. Documented experience and expertise in identifying, evaluating, structuring and negotiating private debt and equity investments; experience in portfolio management. Previous experience in managing small teams, including possibly in different locations. Sound business judgment and strong problem solving/negotiation skills, as well as ability to work effectively on simultaneous projects under time pressure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; understanding of French or Portuguese a plus. A keen interest in development finance and working in a multicultural environment. MBA or equivalent degree with specialization in finance.
