The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa's rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others the implementation of a new organizational structure and the filling of all vacant posts.

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for a position of Senior Scientific Officer (Promotion) for STRC, Lagos Office, within the department of Human Resources, Science and Technology.

2. Major duties and responsibilities:

a. To promote the objectives of the programmes and joint projects within Member States;

b. To coordinate and promote research, development and application of appropriate and sustainable scientific technological options for development of Africa in the following fields:

Health and biomedical research

Indigenous knowledge and traditional medicine

African Medicinal and aromatic plants in particular

Botany and biotechnology

Agriculture and food security

Oceanography, sea, inlands fisheries and environment

c. To design technology plans, technology policy frameworks, and technology incentive structures;

d. To prepare documents and scientific papers and publications, organize technical meetings (Inter-African Committees of Experts), and organize seminars, workshops, symposia;

e. To follow-up actions on recommendations of meetings;

f. To organize training and capacity building in cooperation with member States and international partners;

g. To promote scientific and technical cooperation among Member States;

h. To keep and disseminate to member States information, records and databases of major scientific and technological advances and in collaboration with a member state and international partners;

i. To promote the application of the appropriate technologies using cost effective technology transfer modalities;

j. To initiate and coordinate scientific and technical research projects in collaboration with Member States and international partners with the aim of developing appropriate tools for the economic development of Africa;

k. To carry out any other duties which may be assigned.

3. Educational Qualifications: Candidates must have at least a M.Sc. degree in science or equivalent qualification, preferably with specialization or further qualification in intellectual property rights. A PhD will be an added advantage.

4. Work experience requirement: Candidates must have at least 8 years of working experience in their field of specialization, and knowledge of other fields. Administration and management experience will be an added advantage.

5. Other relevant skills Required :

· Computer literacy

· Excellent knowledge of data analysis and programme/ Project management;

· Management experience, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to organize and motivate others and to work in a multicultural environment;

· Excellent drafting and reporting skills

· Good planning and organizational skills

6. Language requirement: Proficiency in one of the AU working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.

7. Age requirement: Candidates must preferably be between 30 and 45 years old.

8. Tenure of Appointment: The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

Remuneration: Indicative basic salary of US$33,619.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (57% of basic salary), housing allowance (US$21,196.80 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
