Francophone & West Africa Manager

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organisation backed by over three million people from around the world who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for the promises made to the poorest, and we press them to support better policies and more effective aid and trade reform. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency so these resources can be effectively deployed. ONE operates from Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Paris and Washington DC.

We are looking for a Francophone & West Africa Manager to manage ONE’s engagement with government agencies, civil society and private sector organisations based in Francophone African and West Africa countries. This role will work with the Africa Director, France Director and other members of the Africa and France teams to develop effective relationships with government, organisations and key individuals, ensuring that ONE’s priorities are closely aligned with those of our African partners.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of working in the international development sector in a sub-Saharan African country, preferably within an advocacy and/or policy development role. They will also have excellent communication skills with the ability to advocate ONE’s policy positions to partners from different sectors.

Reports to: Deputy Director, Southern Africa

Location: This role will be based in West Africa, exact location TBD. Some regional/ international travel will be required.

Principal Responsibilities
• Lead on ONE’s engagement and advocacy with governments, private sector organisations and civil society groups based in West Africa, working closely with the Africa Director and other relevant members of staff to implement ONE’s Africa strategy and to maintain ONE’s dialogue with partners across government, civil society organisations and international agencies.
• Lead on ONE’s engagement and advocacy in Francophone African countries, working closely with relevant members of the Africa and France teams to maintain ONE’s dialogue with partners across government, civil society organisations and international agencies.
• Manage the implementation of aspects of the ONE’s Africa engagement strategy, with a particular focus on Francophonie and West Africa engagement
• Work closely with the Communications Manager Africa and campaigns staff across the organisation to develop coherent campaigning strategies for these markets.
• Contribute to the preparation of country specific briefings for ONE’s senior staff/high profile advocates in their interactions with leaders in government and civil society
• Support teams within the organisation with the preparation and the coordination of ONE trips to Africa, to ensure briefs have been prepared for trip participants and logistics have been arranged.
• Work closely with the ONE global policy, advocacy and campaigning teams to ensure that all ONE products contain highly credible African content
• Represent ONE at events, conferences and meetings.

Required Skills and competencies (candidates should demonstrate how their experience meets these in their application):

• Significant experience of working in a sub-Saharan African country within the international development sector, preferably within an advocacy or policy development role.
• Excellent knowledge of African institutions, civil society organisations, government agencies, private sector companies and international development agencies based in Francophone Africa and West Africa, with experience of working in partnership with some of these actors.
• A global outlook with a clear understanding of the mechanisms of Western and African markets and the relationships between these markets.
• Outstanding analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills
• Very good communications skills, with experience of influencing stakeholders and establishing and maintaining strong partnerships.
• Ability to responding flexibly to opportunities and requests and to manage competing priorities in a rapidly changing environment
• Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
• Flexible, resourceful and innovative
• A commitment to ONE’s aims and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
• Fluent spoken and written French and English essential; familiarity with other official languages of the African Union desirable.
