National Society and Knowledge Development Zone Coordinator

Purpose of position:
The Zone Coordinator for National Society and Knowledge Development helps national societies to extend the scale, quality and impact of their work through knowledge, capacity building, and standards and systems development.

Based in the Americas Zone Office in Panama City and as part of the Strategic Services and of Learning and Organizational Development (LOD) teams, the post holder is responsible for helping National Societies to enhance their leadership, organisational systems and capacities, and considering measures to enable transformations that allow them to realise their fuller potential in serving the communities of which they are a part. As part of this agenda, the she/he seeks to develop a Red Cross Red Crescent Learning and Knowledge Sharing Network that provides a system for life-long learning and education based on accumulated Red Cross Red Crescent experience.

The Zone Coordinator for National Society and Knowledge Development works under the leadership and direction of the Director of Zone. The technical reporting line of this position is the Head of Department for Learning and Organisational Development in Geneva.

Description of Duties:
Under the policy direction of Strategy 2020, and the Framework and Principles for Building Strong National Societies, support targeted National Societies with assessing their needs and planning for their sustainable self development and will coordinate appropriate follow up at country level.

This includes providing overall support and coordination to the implementation in the Americas to the following initiatives:

1. the Federation Wide Databank & Reporting System,
2. the Organisational Capacity Assessment and Certification Process,
3. the Digital Divide initiative, and
4. the Accredited Learning System

Provide technical assistance to targeted National Societies to progress their agreed self development plans. Produce case studies to document self-development journey of National Societies.

Advance the practical furthering of the Framework and Principles for Building Strong National Societies through proactive advocacy and guidance imparted to IFRC regional and country offices, & National Society leadership and practitioners, on principles, approaches and practical methods for National Society development.

Lead the development of a Movement - wide community of practice in National Society Development through a network of organisational development practitioners to enable the coordinated expansion of capacity to support National Societies.

Through the above mentioned community of practice and in conjunction with the Red Cross Red Crescent Learning and Knowledge Sharing Network, contribute to the systematic codification of knowledge on and related to organisational development, develop related learning and training curricula, and foster exchange of lessons and expertise.

Advise and support National Societies in the issues related to the legal base and interact with the concerned technical department in order to develop and maintain an up to date laws and statutes and implement the recommendations of the "joint statutes commission".

Track new developments and maintain personally an up-to-date professional understanding at the policy and strategic level, of the substantive content of the specific activities covered by the department so as to be able to provide valid direction to staff and to project credible influence in dialogue with peer colleagues within and outside the Movement.

Ensure that quality and timely support is provided to the governance bodies of the International Federation, and their statutory directions and decisions are given prompt effect; provide support for governance advisory bodies as designated.

Promote by personal example, a culture of lesson learning and innovation, and encourage the identification and uptake of best practices and standards.

Articulate well and communicate in a convincing way within the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and with external partners the in-depth orientations that underpin Strategy 2020 and the Business Model, for its delivery, especially in relation to the business lines of priority focus for the department.

Required Qualifications
Education:
University degree, with emphasis on humanitarian or development issues.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience within the RC RC Movement and/ or international humanitarian or development organisations.
Experience in relation to organisational development and capacity enhancement, change management, and related aspects.
Experience in academia or not-for-profit management.
Skills:

Able to work with due sensitivity in a multi-cultural environment and virtual or/and dispersed teams.
Strong written and oral communication skills.

Languages:
Fluent written and spoken English and Spanish.
A good working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese would be preferred.
